Now, Democrats want national security...
Townhall ^ | 2-22-06 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 02/22/2006 7:42:48 AM PST by dson7_ck1249

Now, mirabile dictu, some of the same Democrats who have routinely lambasted such profiling are rushing to the floors of Congress and in front of TV cameras espousing these very same policies. The impetus: the White House's boneheaded insistence on ramming through a $7 billion deal giving United Arab Emirates-owned Dubai Ports World control over significant operations at six major American ports in New York, New Jersey, New Orleans, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Miami....

Michelle Malkin has written a great article in Townhall about some reasons to be concerned at the port deal..but to be even more disgusted by the liberals' newfound passion for national security (which was nowhere to be found when Bush was out trying to secure some of the most volatile regions of the Middle East with peace and democracy)...

Read the article, it's a quick read and well organized...

This will be such a non-issue within a few weeks, no one will remember it.

I don't care which side of the aisle wants national security, just as long as we have it.

I love Michelle, but she's a day late on this one. She jumped on the bandwagon without looking at all the facts.

I've been saying this: The same Dims who want to shut down Gitmo, scream about Abu G.; and oppose racial "profiling" at airports are hammering the WH on this port issue.

None for me, thanks. It sickens me when WE act like THEM.

Hear hear. The Democrats do not have a monopoly on selling out the people for narrow self-interest.

Ironic isn't it? Now, all of a sudden, the Dems have found religion on national security? And the Republicans are, stupidly, linking arms with them without knowing a thing about this deal.

. . . the White House's boneheaded insistence on ramming through a $7 billion deal giving United Arab Emirates-owned Dubai Ports World control over significant operations at six major American ports . . .

Uh, no.

Reviewing a proposed acquisition within a specified time frame (45 days, I believe) and signing off on it for the same reasons just about any other such acquisition had been approved does not equate to "ramming through" the deal.

"Boneheaded" is the right word.

Sure, the Democrats are being their usual screaming, ranting selves. They could care less about our country's security and are only doing this because they see a great chance to bash Bush, their favorite activity.

But this time it is Bush who is giving them the ammunition. People will be thinking that he is selling out our country's security to please big business. And they won't be far wrong.

Many Freepers have pointed out that Dubai is a modern city and that it's foolish to think that a bunch of terrorist thugs will take over our ports. Also that security will be managed by our own people--FBI, police, and so forth. All true.

But it's still a terrible security breach, because it makes it much easier for clandestine operations to breach our security. Does anyone think that port security can be run without consulting with the people who manage the port? They will have access to the computers, they will have plans of the ports and the schedules, they will know how the security badges are used to ID workers. The whole operation will be full of holes leading right back to the UAE, which is a Muslim country, with a king who has written a poem glorifying young suicide bombers and villifying Israel and Sharon.

The door will be wide open for clandestine planning of terrorist attacks, at the ports or through the ports.

Ditto. Very discouraging to hear the demagoguery that is coming from conservatives over this issue.

Right. We have to remember that two of the 9/11 hijackers were from the UAE as well. How much easier do we want to make things for the terrorists?

Question to those who oppose this port deal because a couple of the 9-11 hijackers were from UAE.

Would european countries be right to block US flagged carriers from flying to their airports because ALL of the aircraft used on 9-11 were operated by US flagged carriers?

It is apples to apples simply because this UAE company had no more to do with 9-11 than did American Airlines.

This is STILL a very sophisticated rope-a-dope.

For months, years even, the liberal Dem'crats leapt to the defense of "personal rights", when the fuss was about nationals from Muslim countries being subjected to extraordinary scrutiny for purposes of visa applications, while passing through screening at airports, or applying for various licenses here in the US. Now, suddenly, they see the take-over of the major ports in this country by a foreign operator as a threat.

But wait a minute. A number of these ports have been under foreign operation, some for many years, and no objection was raised. Why now, and why only because these particular ports are being operated by representatives from a Muslim consortium?

Is this tacit acceptance of the original contention by George W. Bush? And by changing his approach to dealing with Muslims, has Bush shifted the paradigm?

Now either the Dem'crats have agreed that Muslim-dominated enterprises are a potential danger to the future security of the US, or they were complete hypocrites all along.

I'm gonna go with complete hypocrisy.

Besides, these ports have been under foreign control anyway. The U.S. is not selling these ports, the London-based company Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company is. It's been theirs all along...the U.S. has inspected the ports and approved the deal.

It would have been better, perhaps if the word ports wasn't being used. Really it is a variety of terminals, aka berths, docks, cranes, etc that will be under contract to this company.

At the same time US Armed Forces are using Dubai facilities every day. Where are the congresscritters objecting to that? They are a forward base extremely close to Iran, and protecting the Strait of Hormuz.

I get so frustrated at the lack of awareness of our pundits and politicians.
