I somehow doubt you are explaining the Grove City situation correctly.

Grove City College went a bit farther. They insisted that they have the right to use religion in admissions decisions.

However, I'm probably not only not explaining it correctly or completely, I probably don't understand it completely either. :)

Hey, watch it. Some of 'us' are Ivy profs, and are cheering, too.

(Only temporarily--I'm a Visiting Professor at U. Penn. this semester.)

Thanks.

I was hoping it wasn't some "Faces of Death" or "Rotten.com" excerpt.

You'll have to give us the juicy details on the number of times the liberal prof's at Penn try to tar and feather you.

Beware though - that while the case in this ruling is a victory, it is a double-edged sword. if there is a policy we oppose, a school will have to follow that policy if they accept Fed funds too.

That already happens, it just worked both ways this time.

Did anyone think to check her pulse?

Had she assumed room temperature by the end of the session?

Ginsberg is not an irrational person. Probably more practical, and certainly a better jurist than O'C. Just compare opinions.

Tribute To The American Flag

This piece of cloth is a composite of each of you, your ideals, your hopes, and your dreams. It is a symbol of a government that is built on a dream of equality,
freedom and hope, but its fulfillment is dependent on each of you.
Our flag of Red, White and Blue-
Red, not of blood shed but a Love spread from one another,
White as a crystalization of all the wonderful teachings of a good life, and
Blue of condfidence.
Confidence in your flag, your country , and its confidence in you.
Is anybody there? Does anybody care?
I care and I pledge my allegiance to the Flag of the United States
and to that great republic for which she stands.
Wherever it waves, it reassures men of the existance and the
power of freedom and democracy, it reassures them of their own abilities
to govern themselves. Over the field of battle, it serves to remind soldiers
of that for which they fight, and too often die.
I was born and American, I shall live as an American and I shall die as an American,
ever ready to dedicate myself to its call and its stars and stripes-
The American Flag

i have cousins who home school. i was thinking of the possibiblity of federal interference via non validation or imposition on curricula for their children

That is why home schoolers have no wish to have anything to do with federal money and 99% of them have nothing to do with the local public school. Once you take federal money in any form then they have some say in what you do, without their money they keep their nose out of you business, especially if the reason you home school is religious.

Grove City didn't deal with whether or not the school could use religious requirements in admission, it dealt with conditioning the school's receipt of financial aid (by way of students receiving federal grants) on compliance with Title IX provisions.

The Court ruled the federal gov't could place this sort of condition w/out violating the 1st Amendment rights of the students or the school.
