PHOENIX - Gov. Janet Napolitano on Wednesday ordered more National Guardsmen posted at the Mexican border to help stop illegal immigrants and curb related crimes.
National Guard troops have worked at the border since 1988, but Napolitano signed an order authorizing commanders to station an unspecified number of additional soldiers there to help federal agents.
Once the funding is approved, the troops will monitor crossing points, assist with cargo inspection and operate surveillance cameras, according to the order.
"They are not there to militarize the border," the governor said. "We are not at war with Mexico."
About 170 National Guardsmen are already posted at the nation's busiest illegal entry point, where they assist with communications, fence construction and anti-drug efforts.
Napolitano did not say how many additional troops would be stationed at the border and referred questions to the National Guard, which did not immediately return a call.
Napolitano has asked the military to pay for her plan, but said she would commit state dollars if necessary.
The governor declared an immigration emergency last summer in Arizona's four border counties, citing security shortcomings by the federal government.
This is a great idea but only if they are willing to back it up with force.
I hate to say it, but the ONLY way this will change is for a politician's family member to be seriously harmed from an illegal.
60% of Houston streets are under construction...if we lock up the border...the construction will never get finished. (a hint of sarcasm)
So, IMHO, they need to finish all God Awful construction...then lock up the border...or lock up the border, and keep all the undocumented workers that are working here...here.
That could be 2 more troops for all we know.
Well, aren't there a bunch of Katrina people sitting there in Houston collecting Fed money and doing nothing? Put them to work earning their free ride.
Must be up for election this year.
I agree with you...if you can get them to work. It's all about motivation. Still, I hate to be a foreman at a work site where people who dont normally want to work are forced to work.
It's all about motivation. there's lot's of posts where people joke that undocumented workers are only doing the work that Americans dont want to do...but the bitter reality is...there's some truth to that statement.
Last wednesday Gov. Napolitano said she would put troops on the border... lots of Freepers said she was bluffing. Guess she wasn't.
Here was the FR post last wednesday:

Funny I just finished some work for a customer of mine this morning and he told me, "I am a lifelong Republican... but I will vote for anybody who shuts down illegal immigration at the border."
"Napolitano did not say how many additional troops would be stationed at the border and referred questions to the National Guard, which did not immediately return a call."
I want to know the answer to this. If it's a good amount, then she deserves some praise...I don't care if she's liberal. Good work can be done by all.
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. My Bush Epiphany By Lawrence Auster
You are very cynical and also very correct.
Just typical. Call out the Guard! Throw some money around! Make a noise!. Just make sure the voters don't figure out that we are just allowing the next generation of Democrat voters in.
You may be correct. $10 Million just does not go as far as it used to.....
And he is not the only one I can tell you. The thing that AMAZES ME, is the Rep's can be SO STUPID to let this issue go to the Dems. Napolitano is a good example of someone is doing this and I can tell you no sissy Republican is going to beat her. SECURITY is so important, but our president has his head stuck in the ground... what a shame.
And,most of her support comes from the southern portion of the state.
And even the 'minorityvoters' down there are starting to b*tch.
