See... this is what happens when you are weak on security. The dems will move in and take the issue over. I for one, as a conservative... support this democratic governor on this issue.

The only surprise here is that it took the Dims this long to figure it out.

Ms. Napolitano is not afraid to take the bull by the horns, like so many AZ Republicans are.

But Republicans have since charged that her position gave the Democratic governor an escape clause, allowing her to talk tough in an election year while not actually doing anything about the border problem.

Served on a silver plater.

Ariz. Gov.: Place Troops on Mexico Border

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that she is prepared to use state money to send National Guard troops to the Arizona-Mexico border to crack down on illegal immigration if the Pentagon declines to pick up the bill.

It was the first time the governor has said she would be willing to use state money. In December, Napolitano said her plan would be impossible without complete federal funding.

But Republicans have since charged that her position gave the Democratic governor an escape clause, allowing her to talk tough in an election year while not actually doing anything about the border problem.

Arizona is the nation's busiest illegal entry point, and the state feels the federal government is not doing enough to stop it. Napolitano has proposed expanding the National Guard's border presence.

Somebody's going to get smart about this issue. Watch her use the "If we didn't have so many troops in Iraq, we could secure the borders" argument. The problem is, its a winning argument. Bush better get going fast with this.

more power to her then... over here in Cali we have a Republican Governor (barf)

What really upsets me is that you know our President is well aware of this border problem. Almost every conservative talk show I listen to has callers sreaming about this problem daily. So WTF? We really have a problem here. I knew long ago when Pres. Bush called the Minutemen "vigilantes" that he was on the wrong side of the issue. Something about this whole thing doesn't make sense though. Why would Bush just sit on this issue while his base really wants him to move on it immediately... especially now when he could use a little "shoring up?"

Why didn't Napolitano do this years ago? Is it election time?

The dems do? I know that. I am not crossing over... hell no. I am just saying that we can't let them outmanuever us on security and between the Mexican border and Portgate they already are taking that position. If we lose the security issue...well... good luck.

Ding Ding ! We have a winner - She's up for election this year !

What kind of a fool "threatens" the Feds with " If you don't give me money, I'll just have to spend my own " ?

She said she was going to do this months ago. Big press conference and all. Yet nothing. This is what this lady does. It is election time and she needs votes. She is also the one that called a popular vote law greatly decreasing illegal aliens access to government programs illegal. It passed by like a 30 point margin in 2004 (prop 202 I think). She talks out of both sides of her mouth.

"be ye doers... not just hearers only." I know its a little silly to quote the Big Guy on this one but hey -stand4somethin

Agreed... she is just a windbag so far. But aren't they all. There have already been three or four posts today on this issue of the border... everyone is a windbag with the exception of the Minutemen. They are doers.

bingo Extreme. Maybe someone could go back and dig up her thoughts/opinions/actions/voting record on Immigration a few years ago. I could be wrong, but I bet she was useless and probably put up hurdles.

Are you kidding? Napolitano has vetoed literally dozens of bills passed by the Republican legislature to address illegal immigration. She campaigned against Proposition 200. It is only been in the last few months, with an election coming and the realization that illegal immigration is going to be the top issue, that Napolitano decided to pretend like she is tough on this issue. She is a grandstanding fraud!

Nevertheless, I do appreciate her efforts to humiliate Bush on this issue. He has earned them and they are richly deserved.

Have no fear. GasCan Jan has been saying that for 3 months now. She keeps threating and no action. i know I live in Phoenix. She has STOPPED countless bills, Prop's voted on to stop illegals from coming in.

Remember one thing....SHE'S UP FOR REELECTION IN '06. She is the front runner and her talk is real cheap, look at her record.
