The human race does not derive from a single man and woman.

Sure they did - Adam and Eve, and then Noah and his wife.

Our most recent male universal ancestor didn't live at anything like the same time as our most recent female universal ancestor;

You were there to witness, it, or are you falling for untestable uniformitarian hypotheses from short data spans?

and both of those people were part of much larger populations who also contribute to the modern gene-pool.

Of course they were. All those simultaneous births of human beings as mutated from monkeys.

The genetic evidence for that is quite clear

Clear to who? Atheists and other crackpots? Those folks were shocked by the evidence when they first saw it, since it went against what they expected (human descent from a large group of non-common ancestors).

Now say you have a village where everyone has your ancestral suname (not farfetched - my wife and I have both visited our isolated ancestral villages in the Appenines and Alps, and they are pretty much like that). This could be because either (a) everyone is descended from one original couple with that name, or (b) other couples originally present have now had their name die out. Without additional knowledge, neither position can be proven as certainty.

As a Christian, we have a certainty of faith that our common genetic ancestors were singular people, and that there are not other collateral lines that died out. I'm not sure where your certainty in the contrary comes from.

but I don't really want to get into a debate about that while discussing the engineering impracticality of the Noah myth

Why not? Its certainly a related question.

(even though it is genetically quite clear that the human race does not derive from 3 brothers and their wives of around 4500ya, nor do other species show a genetic bottleneck at that date).

I've never argued for the silly 2500 BC date of Usher. Why do you bring it up?
