MISSION CONTROL CENTER, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - The next crew to man the world's sole civilian space station will make something of a departure from the customary agenda of technical work and scientific experiment by indulging in a spot of golf.

"This will be an attempt to tee off a ball into open space using an ordinary club," Pavel Vinogradov, who will lift off to the station with American Jeffrey Williams on March 30, told journalists Tuesday. "I have never played golf myself, but have practiced with Jeffrey a couple of times."

Although golf is a relative sporting newcomer to Russia, Vinogradov seemed to be enthusiastic about the game and with his zero-gravity driving range will be going one step further than astronaut Alan Shepherd, who became the first man to strike a golf ball on the Moon in 1971.

Be kind of funny if he misses the ball and flies off the space station never to be seen again.

One day a space shuttle will be tooling around out there and a golf ball will come sailing thru the windshield.

I always thought it was the grandest of all American gestures when Alan Shepard flew all the way to the moon to hit a golf ball. What do you think the Soviets made of that?

This is pathetic ... what they have to do just to make the news these days. How far our noble quest for space has fallen short.

If my quick math is correct, that would send the astronaut hurtling at 0.05 mph (translation only, though the swinging motion would also give his organs some "artificial gravity")

This is pathetic ...?

I thought it was pathetic when JPL was announcing the name of the song the were going to "wake up" on of the Mars rovers each day.

Yep, that intrepid variation of a Turing machine really needed its morale boosted ...

The worlds first $100 billion dollar zero hole guaranteed to lose your ball golf course...

I hope they use the men's tee. I'd hate to see them penalized a stroke.

I'm hoping its an elaborate plan to brain Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong Il with a golf ball and have a plausable 'sorry, sht happens' to follow it with:)

No doubt, LOL.

I like to think of Bill Clinton as the nation's mulligan.
