Police Uncover New Duke Lacrosse E-Mail Apr 05 3:15 PM US/Eastern Email this story

By EMERY P. DALESIO Associated Press Writer

DURHAM, N.C.

Hours after an exotic dancer was allegedly raped by members of the Duke University lacrosse team, a player apparently sent an e-mail saying he wanted to invite more strippers to his dorm room, kill them and skin them. It was not clear whether the message was serious or a joke.

Investigators did not return calls seeking comment about the nature of the e-mail. But a lawyer for the player who purportedly wrote it said the content suggests his client is innocent.

"While the language of the e-mail is vile, the e-mail itself is perfectly consistent with the boys' unequivocal assertion that no sexual assault took place that evening," said attorney Robert Ekstrand. The e-mail "demonstrates that its writer is completely unaware that any act or event remotely similar to what has been alleged ever occurred."

No charges have been filed in the case, which has roiled the campus and the community and led the school to suspend the lacrosse team from play.

The e-mail, according to an application for a search warrant of the player's dorm room, was sent from his Duke e-mail account just before 2 a.m. on March 14. Police said investigators received a copy from a confidential source, though they later won a court order seeking access to the account.

In the e-mail, addressed "To whom it may concern," the player says he has "decided to have some strippers over" to his dorm room, "however there will be no nudity."

"I plan on killing the bitches as soon as the walk in and proceding to cut their skin off," the author of the e-mail says, adding in vulgar terms that he would find the act sexually satisfying.

The e-mail was signed with what police said is the player's jersey number.

The warrant for the player's room was made public on Wednesday. In it, police provide a detailed timeline of the alleged attack and some additional details of their investigation. The warrant also adds conspiracy to commit murder as one of the crimes police are investigating.

The dancer, a student at a nearby university, has told police she was raped at the party by three men who restrained and choked her in a bathroom.

Investigators have collected DNA from 46 of the 47 team members. The team's lone black member did not provide a sample because the dancer, who is black, said her attackers were white. A spokeswoman for the state attorney general's office said Wednesday the analysis has not been completed.

The lacrosse team's co-captains have denied that anyone was sexually assaulted at the party, as have attorneys for the players.

According to the warrant, the alleged victim told police she believes the players used false names and falsely claimed to be members of Duke's baseball and track teams. A team captain and resident of the house where the party took place told police he used an alias when hiring the dancers at the party, the warrant states.

Or inclined to step up his sick thrills.

Uffda! If he wasn't serious, he's still seriously stupid to write such a thing.

This will not endear him to those looking for a reason to hate privileged white boy athletes, I'd guess.

Hm. I'd say precisely the opposite -- that the guy is at least aware of the allegations, and is making light of them.

Ok...

But if this kind of information can be released why can't a summary of the results of the DNA tests be released. This is like trying the case in the media by pointing out how stupid some of these guys are without proof that they are criminals. I have no sympathy for any of them who raped anyone. On the other hand, so far no one has been charged much less indicted.

And this email can prove this how? Was there DNA on it?

And this email can prove this how?

He didn't say "prove", he said "suggest."

it suggests his client is innocent because if his client had actually committed a real violent crime immediately beforehand he wouldn't be writing emails callously joking about vicious crimes.

Unless he was insane - which is also a defense.

Someone has some problems. Duke has to be the most expensive university to go to. You just pay for the name recognition. No offense to any Duke alumni.

What I think the email shows is that immediately after the party the lacrosse players are very angry and believe themselves to have been wronged by the strippers (not vice versa). This is consistent with the version of the incident coming from the lacrosse players side, i.e., that the strippers came and were paid but did not perform (at least for long) and left early, and nobody raped her.

What might have happened, short of rape, is that when the one stripper went back in to get her shoes, some players demanded their money back and got into a physical fight with her, and took at least some of the money back (which could explain at least the bruises and lost fingernails on the one stripper).

She knew she was raped when the check bounced (sarc). Or, in this case, when it was obvious that she wasn't gonna get a big tip. I'll believe this rape accusation when a trial is held and a conviction obtained, not before.

Yea, that's good approach to free speech which is obviously sarcastic.

Some DNA must have been found on the victim or else why would they test the team?

First level of test is blood type, if the blood type of a team member does not match that of the sample then that guy is eliminated. The in depth comparison should be back soon and I think there is a good chance that none of the team members will be indicated. If that is so

If they don't find DNA from members of the team, they should get their money back.

So "suggests" is not equal to "proves"? I really believe that is what the lawyer was alluding to. They do this in court all the time.

Foot...meet mouth. I don't know and this point don't care if these guys are guilty. But some of these Duke students seem more disturbed by the day

she believes the players used false names and falsely claimed to be members of Duke's baseball and track teams

Why didn't they use names from the football team?!? Nobody has ever heard of them!! ;)
