Fraternities will not be allowed to have parties with alcohol, according a press release from the president of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) at CU-Boulder.

CU sophomore Jesse B. Gomez attended a party at the Theta Xi fraternity house for about 60 to 90 minutes April 8. Gomez was found dead April 9. The cause of death is still not known, and the investigation is continuing.

“We are awaiting the outcome of the police investigation Š before releasing specific details regarding the event,” the press release announced.

The restrictions on partying are “indefinite” and “highly dependent on the outcome of the ongoing investigation,” according to the press release.

The case of Gomez's death is still under investigation. Where Gomez was before and after the party is still in question. Gomez was reported to leave the Theta Xi house between 1 and 1:15 a.m. Sunday, and was later seen in his dorm by other residents at about 3 a.m.

A roommate found Gomez dead in his dorm room in the afternoon.

IFC told the fraternities and their members to comply with law enforcement agencies working on the investigation, according to the press release.

“If Theta Xi or any other fraternity is found to have potentially violated our Constitution or IFC Event Planning Policy, the IFC Executive Board reserves the right to file internal charges against the accused fraternity,” said the press release.

Theta Xi registered the party with IFC and CUPD in advance, and took security measures such as sober event monitors, door control and two registered Student Emergency Medical Service members.

The CUPD is not discussing if people involved with the case are cooperating, if there were any incidents at the Theta Xi party on April 8 or if any other new findings have been found.

The Boulder County Coroner reported Monday that there was no trauma or foul play. The Coroner's office is still running toxicology reports.

“We're going to wait for the toxicology reports, just like everybody else,” said Lt. Tim McGraw of the CU Police Department. “Once the coroner determines the cause of death, we will determine where we will go with our investigation.”

Investigators are even checking on Gomez's personal Web site on www.facebook.com, but are looking at it with a wary eye.

“We use just about everything we can find,” said McGraw. “It's certainly not unfounded that people embellish their Internet profiles.”

In my best John Belushi voice: "Road Trip!"

It's time to move the frat-house off campus. :)

As usual, blame the fraternities is the name of the game on campuses. It would be way to easy to say the kid simply drank too much and essentially killed himself. I guarantee you, no one forced that kid to drink.

What a joke.

Hmmm ... not much reason left to attend college there.

What's up with having to "register a party"? This is nuts.

Ridiculous. Let's all stand a give a round of applause to the overabundance of lawyers who have erased the concept of personal responsibility. Every tragedy is now a winning lottery ticket, and so we must avoid doing anything fun at all so we don't risk getting sued.

Yep, we have to register parties. Basically, if there are more people in your house than there are members, you have to register it with the Center for Greek Life at least a week in advance. We are only allowed 5 "registered" parties a semester. Yep, this is what happens when parents decide to sue fraternities for their own child's poor choices.

"Like that will stop them."

Amen! When I got out of the Navy in 72' I enrolled at MTSU in Murfreesboro, Tn. Due to the rules at that time I was REQUIRED to live in a dorm (they also tried to make me enroll in ROTC but we got that fixed) with all the 18 YO's. They made me the dorm supervisor because I was "mature" having been in the service. I gave up after about a week and just pretended I didn't see anything. They fired me after some of the guys made a bomb and blew one of the doors half way off.

Real smart. Now they will get drunk off-campus and drive back. I live in a dry county and kids have been dying in accidents for years because of the local prohibition laws.

As a former dorm counselor, trying to keep college guys from drinking is like trying to outlaw gravity.
