The Iranian morality police are extending the long reach of the law to dolls, and has activated an official ban on the sale of Barbies. Meet Dara and Sara -- complete with a little head scarf for the eight year old Muslim girl doll. The ban on the pert little American teenage doll produced by the U.S.-based Mattel Company, as well as the accessories she comes with, is part of the response to tightened sanctions against the Islamic Republic by Western nations. Muslim clerics had already succeeded in banning the curvaceous cutie in Saudi Arabia in 2003, outlawing Barbie altogether...

'The home secretary is banning Muslims Against Crusades (MAC), a group that planned an anti-Armistice Day protest. It had wanted to repeat a demonstration held last year, when it burned poppies near London's Albert Hall. Theresa May's order will make membership or support of MAC a criminal offence. It is closely linked to seven other previously-banned groups. The organisation, now dissolved, said "the call for Islam will never be silenced by any ban or proscription". Mrs May said she was satisfied that Muslims Against Crusades (MAC) was "simply another name for an organisation already proscribed under a number of names"....

We have been following the ban imposed on conservative radio host Michael Savage by England barring him from entry into the country. England now appears to have reaffirmed the decision and accuses Savage of promising to retract some of his statements and failing to do so. While I strongly disagree with many of Savages statements, I view the ban as part of a disturbing trend limiting free speech in the West and particularly in England. In the communication below, Treasury Solicitor Michael Atkins tells counsel for Savage that he previously assured the government that Savage would repudiate some of...

This Christmas in Bethlehem, the cross has been banned from souvenirs for tourists and pilgrims in the Holy Land... Samir Qumsieh, journalist and director of the Catholic television station Al-Mahed Nativity TV in Bethlehem, said: "I want to launch a campaign to urge people not to buy these products - he says - because the removal of the cross is an intimidation against Christians, it is like saying that Jesus was never crucified. " Qumsieh points out that from 2002 to 2010 the Christian population of Bethlehem has dropped from over 18 thousand to 11 thousand people... Only 15,400 Christians...

We are far too accustomed to thinking that the Middle East is populated only by Muslims and a few Jews. There are Christians living there, too, often beleaguered and under attack. Here are three stories that remind us during this Christmas season that life for Christians in the Holy Land during this Holy Season can be particularly perilous. First, we learn that the cross, the very symbol of Christianity, has basically been abolished from Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. This Christmas in Bethlehem, the cross has been banned from souvenirs for tourists and pilgrims in the Holy Land. Some textile...

Christmas has been banned by the Red Cross from its 430 fund-raising shops. Staff have been ordered to take down decorations and to remove any other signs of the Christian festival because they could offend Moslems. The charity's politically-correct move triggered an avalanche of criticism and mockery last night - from Christians and Moslems. Christine Banks, a volunteer at a Red Cross shop in New Romney, Kent, said: 'We put up a nativity scene in the window and were told to take it out. It seems we can't have anything that means Christmas. We're allowed to have some tinsel but...

Virus-infected computers that pose a risk to other PCs should be blocked from the net, a senior researcher at software giant Microsoft suggests. The proposal is based on lessons from public health, said Scott Charney of the firm's Trustworthy Computing team. It is designed to tackle botnets - networks of infected computers under the control of cybercriminals. Putting machines in temporary quarantine would stop the spread of a virus and allow it to be cleaned.

Brazil's comedians and satirists have been banned from making fun of candidates ahead of the nation's presidential election in October. The legal ban could last until a possible runoff on Oct 31. Brazilian performers are planning to fight for their right to ridicule with protests in Rio de Janeiro and other cities on Sunday. Dubbed the "anti-joking law", the relic of Brazil's 1964-1985 dictatorship prohibits ridiculing candidates in the three months before elections. Critics say the ban threatens free speech and is a blight on the reputation of Latin America's largest nation. "Do you know of any other democracy in...

A group of high school students attending a conservative leadership conference in Washington, D.C. said they were ordered by a security guard to stop singing the national anthem during a June 25 visit to the Lincoln Memorial. They told them to stop singing, said Evan Gassman, a spokesman for the Young Americas Foundation. I was taken aback. You wouldnt expect a display of national patriotism to be censored." ... If their idea of civil disobedience is singing the national anthem, then so be it, Gassman said. Let them disobey. The crime was "singing it loudly".

He publishes an email from MSNBC President Phil Griffin explaining the reasoning (a cheap shot), but Moulitsas concludes he has been booted from the network because of a Scarborough temper tantrum. Moulitsas writes today on Daily Kos about the circumstances in a post Why I am blacklisted by MSNBC. In case you were wondering why you havent seen me on MSNBC recently, it seems that Joe...

Chicago, IL) The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago), a.k.a. CAIR-Illinois, in a hit piece against top counter-terrorism expert Steven Emerson dated May 1st, described the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, as a world-renowned Muslim scholar. This, while al-Qaradawi, on a number of occasions, has personally stated his support for suicide bombings and for attacks against American troops. As well, al-Qaradawi is known to be a fervent anti-Semite, a trait that CAIR-Chicagos Executive Director, Ahmed Rehab, has exhibited from time to time.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced today a moratorium on official city travel to Arizona after the state enacted a controversial new immigration law that directs local police to arrest those suspected of being in the country illegally. The ban on city employee travel to Arizona takes effect immediately, although there are some exceptions, including for law enforcement officials investigating a crime, officials said. It's unclear how many planned trips by city workers will be curtailed.

A Southern California school district has pulled dictionaries from classrooms because a parent complained when a child came across the term "oral sex." District officials said Friday that the Menifee Union School District -- which serves 9,000 kindergartners through eight graders in Riverside County -- is forming a committee to consider a permanent classroom ban of the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. A memo from Assistant Superintendent Karen Valdes acknowledged it is a respected resource but district officials found that "a number of referenced words are age-inappropriate." Some parents and free-speech advocates said the district is overreacting. Peter Scheer, executive director...

Right-Wing Flame War! By JONATHAN DEE Published: January 21, 2010 Charles Johnson has been writing a blog for almost as long as the word blog has existed. A bearish, gentle-voiced, ponytailed man who for three decades enjoyed a successful career as a jazz guitarist accompanying the likes of Al Jarreau and Stanley Clarke, Johnson has always had a geeks penchant for self-education, and in that spirit he cultivated a side interest, and ultimately an expertise, in writing computer code. His Web log, which he named Little Green Footballs (a private joke whose derivation he has always refused to divulge), was...

A Brookline business that lets customers roll their own cigarettes has banned "pipe tobacco" from its rolling machines in response to a judge's order, the shop's lawyers said yesterday. The court order takes away only a portion of the business Tobacco Haven has been doing, but it is a portion that is of particular concern to the state. The state Attorney General's Office, which sued the retailer in August, alleges it is illegal for Tobacco Haven to stuff "pipe tobacco" into cigarettes unless the company pays taxes on it. The state has also argued that "pipe tobacco" is singularly

Hard-edged propaganda now suffuses America's history textbooks. A thorough cover-to-cover reading of almost any high school history text leaves you with the impression that the United States is at best embarrassing, and at worst a menace to world peace. I think I was in fifth grade when I began to suspect that textbooks weren't entirely on the level. The first tip-off came from the word problems in math class. They typically began with scenarios that, even to a 10-year-old, seemed a little unlikely: "Julio's mom is a welder. His father is a pediatric nurse. If his mom welds for 9...

Official correspondence, released under the United Kingdom's Freedom of Information law, reveals that U.S. radio talk-show host Michael Savage's name was placed on a list of people banned from Britain in order to provide "balance" to a "least wanted" list dominated by Muslim extremists, and the decision was made "at the highest level of government," the London Daily Mail reported today. According to Savage, after researching the information he and his lawyers obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, there is significant evidence to suggest that there are more American talk show personalities whose names are also on the United Kingdom's...
