The 26-year-old man killed after a short police pursuit in Elk Grove this week was shot in the back by the officer, according to his death certificate, conflicting with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department account that he was shot at least twice in the "upper chest."

That's all there is at his point. The link at sacbee.com refers to the main page of the site. I'll monitor and update if they don't pull the story.

c'mon now. cops don't do that.

Let's hope he wasn't illegal or we'll never hear the end of it. Mexico will demand the cop be tried in a mexican court.

Now that I remember more of the story as it was presented on the morning news... the perp 'attacked' the LEO with garden implements (rake, hoe, piece of wood) but was later found with a gun in his pants. I reserve to change my account after dinner when I research more.

The story is written at though the two accounts contradict each other. They don't. A person can be shot in the back and twice in the "upper chest" at the same time. Many bullets, if entering the upper back of an erect man, would exit the upper chest, or vice versa.

The man was 26, was a convicted drug-dealer, had 5 kids (though they didn't say by how many different mothers), and he threw a 12-inch gardening pot at the officer, and that pot did strike him in the HEAD.
The man's first name was Lacharles, or Jerome, or something.

Alexander, who was convicted in 2001 on a felony drug charge, apparently tried to escape through a backyard. When the officer caught up to him, he allegedly threw a 12-inch ceramic flower pot at the officer's head. The Sheriff's Department said Alexander "continued to attack." The officer then fired his weapon. Alexander was pronounced dead at UC Davis Medical Center, where sheriff's officials said a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol was found in his pants pocket. The second man seen in the car remained at large Friday night.Hmmm. A felon with a gun in his pocket. Guess he hadn't been rehabilitated yet. Probably on the road to recovery.

Good memory:
Here's the details from an earlier report....
"The officer caught up with Alexander in the Owl Court backyard. Alexander threw a 12-inch flowerpot at the policeman, hitting him in the head and dazing him, Lewis said."
"The officer, in fear for his life, fired his handgun, striking the suspect in the upper torso," according to Lewis.
"The suspect continued to fight and grabbed nearby garden tools, attempting to hit the officer, when the officer fired subsequent shots, striking the suspect again in the upper chest."
There's no indication the guy was running away at the time he was shot, he could just as likely been turning to pick up something else to throw. I'd be really careful about drawing conclusions from the "shot in the back" meme.

The man's first name was Lacharles, or Jerome, or something. Close.... Lamarr.
The incident was the third shooting incident in Elk Grove in a couple of days, including one where a guy pulled over for a traffic stop opened fire.

Wow, in liberal Kalifornia, you have a lot of suspicious shootings such as in San Bernandino County when the deputy shot the unarmed, on-leave, Air Force Police Officer point-blank and then told him, on tape, to "shut the f**k up" because the victim was groaning after being shot.

she thinks there is a written policy in the department regarding when an officer is authorized to use deadly force Even in Eureka, there'd be a use of force policy. This was just a couple of blocks away from the Inn, on the northbound 101, right?

You are right. The Inn has been closed for a couple of years and was purchased by a group from Redding. They want the city to give them millions of redevelopment money but the city has several projects they are committed to...

If the perp was a danger to the officer or other's in the area, then you use whatever means necessary to take the perp down.

I thought Elk Grove was all SUV driving yuppies mad at the railroad for blocking the crossings on the way to Starbucks?
