Dutch reconsider Islamic values
BBC ^ | 4/21/06

A new report submitted to the Dutch government has sparked controversy by arguing that Islam does not conflict with either human rights or Dutch values. Islam has been a hot topic in the Netherlands since the killing of a controversial film-maker, Theo van Gogh, by a young Muslim in 2004.

In a country traditionally seen as one of the most liberal and tolerant in Europe, Islam and Muslims are now viewed with suspicion.

The report is the fruit of three years' work by the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), a think-tank in The Hague which advises the government. It examines the evolution of thinking about democracy and human rights in a dozen Muslim countries, ranging from Egypt and Iran to Indonesia. Jan Schoonenboom, a member of the council who supervised the research, says it highlights the variety and dynamism of Islamic activism. While there are radical, jihadi trends, there are also more mainstream Islamic movements which are moving, albeit slowly, towards democratisation.

The report has already been roundly attacked.

He and his colleagues take issue with Ms Hirsi Ali and others who say Islam is not compatible with democracy or women's rights or Dutch values.

Of course they do. They are experts, whereas she has only spent her life as a woman living under the system. Who would you believe?

So women are now property of their men in Holland?
And either their fathers or their husbands or their elder brothers must look out for them, and they must never be allowed out in public unless accompanied by one of these; and if they do venture out unaccompanied, they must have their noses slit?

Wonderful, tolerant Amsterdam!

Knighthawk,

Just let us know when ever you're ready to reside in the US. With amnesty in the air, there's no better time than now!

To the extent that's true that's being forced on them by Bush (Egypt, Kuwait...)

Does that include public beheadings and honor killings? See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil--die.

"The report has already been roundly attacked."

Perhaps there is hope after all. It's not surprising that the politically correct idiots who did this study came up with this conclusion, but I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised that the rest of politically correct Netherlands can wake itself from it's slumber enough to "roundly attack" these ridiculous findings. Hip-Hip-Horray!!!

The Muzzies are just like us...except for the beheadings, treating their women as cattle, honor killings, sending their children out to blow up themselves and others, pilgrimage stampedes, surrendering every aspect of their lives and freedom to some insane imam, etc. In fact, they shouldn't even qualify for the diversity requirements that all good Lefties insist on, since they are so like us.

Islam does not conflict with either human rights or Dutch values...

Right. Just remember that if they had stuck a picture of Muhammad on the cover of the report they would all be in hiding fearing for their lives.

Either these people were born and raised in that building and have never had access to anyone or anything outside it, or they're being paid by a pro-Muslim source. My money's on the latter.

Islam does not conflict with either human rights or Dutch values? Hmm, I can't recall the last time there was a beheading or an honor killing in the Netherlands.

You forgot tolerance and forgiveness.

The worst thing about the Muzzies is they don't want to assimilate and demand that the majority bow to their values. Unfortunately, they've been successful because everyone is either too politically correct or scared the peaceful Muzzies will kill them.

I was reading on about singularity and paradigms shifts on the web and there was a discussion about the violence (of ideas) during paradigm shifts.

Proponents of the old and new literally duke it out, but the new always wins (otherwise it wouldn't be a "shift").

I think we see a lot of that here at FR over the islam issue. Both sides are pretty fiery (myself included).

I suggest the whole world (and islam itself) is involved in a paradigm shift regarding islam. Islam is swimming against the tide and will lose...unless it raises the stakes of the argument to the apocalyptic level.
