Religion may hinder Romney in '08
Chicago Sun Times ^

Prominent, respectable Evangelical Christians have told me, not for quotation, that millions of their co-religionists cannot and will not vote for Romney for president solely because he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If Romney is nominated and their abstention results in the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, that's just too bad. The evangelicals are adamant, saying there is no way Romney can win them over.

... there are people who have views about religion that don't leave much choice about where things stand, just as there are those same types regarding race, gender, etc.

Yes,and they're called bigots.

Are you equating Scientology with Mormons?

They are both "made up" religions. I don't see why not. Personally, I would not vote for Romney because the man is a socialist. Not because he is a Mormon. Though I would use that as a backup excuse.

If JFK didn't then, he does now.

If Republicans won't vote for him because he's Mormon, that's fscked up, and we'll deserve to have a Democrat in office.

With the percentage of the US population currently taking Prozac, Ritalin, and a bunch of other things the Scientologists disapprove of, I can't see how a Scientologist would stand a chance in a general election.

If it's *really* come to that, then I do believe that it's come time that Evangelical Christians need to find unclaimed territory somewhere outside of international law and start their own society devoid of contact with the outside world.

good chuckler - same time, true

Gee, that makes sense. Why not ask a disgruntled priest to tell you all about Catholicism?

"To some Christians, mormons are like pagans.

To some Muslims, Christians are like pagans.

The bottom line is, people are allowed to vote for whomever they wish. Others may cast judgement on the way people vote, but...it IS their right to vote or not vote for someone BECAUSE they are a Mormon, Christian, Jew, White, Black, Male, Female or whatever. I happen to think single issue voters are idiots for the most part, but hey, that often makes me an idiot as well. Ah well. Like the joke about being in Hell, you are there with all of your friends, right?

Given his record, I doubt even many Mormons would vote for him.

Oh no, I didn't take your post that way at all.
People having unflattering opinions of other groups is a common reality. Interpersonal contact between decent people usually solves that problem pretty quickly.

Just heard the tail end where John brought up his religion.

What he said was right. I'm an Evangelical Christian and I know about Mormonism, and don't believe it is a Christian denomination.

That said, I don't know what policies in a hypothetical Romney administration would be affected by his religion. As others have mentioned, it is his leftward lean that would keep me from voting him in a primary, but nothing would keep me from voting for him against a RAT.

How about his liberal politics?
Think THAT will have much effect on GOP voters?

"...Interpersonal contact between decent people usually solves that problem pretty quickly..."

A very sensible observation. I often marvel that many libs who have the chance to talk with conservatives personally actually...gasp...like them, ala Rush Limbaugh (or so he says).

My dearest friend (my brother) is quite liberal, but...he tolerates and loves me with a smile...:)

I think evangelicals will look at a candidate's positions on issues compared to the opponent. That's how it works. They won't warm up to him because he's a Mormon but they will warm up to Hillary even less so there you go. It's always the lesser of evils.

I'd have no problem voting for Romney if he were not a RINO. I bunch him, McCain and Guiliani in the same boat. The fact that he is a Mormon would otherwise be a plus to me.

I can't forsee the GOP nominating an atheist no matter his views on the hot issues. That was my point is raising the question.

It doesn't have anything to do with voters' opinion of athiesm. It has to do with the probability and the population of athiests. Among Christians/Theists, you will find a handful of people who are capable of rising through the ranks to national leadership. Among athiests, you not only have a much smaller 'talent' pool, but that pool is more likely have members that engage in self-destructive, anti-social behavior than the non-athiest American population. I'm sure you are a swell guy but most athiests are a pretty despicable lot.
