George Allen: Rebel flag was teen 'attitude.' Magazine reports on rebel symbols he had in school
Richmond Times-Dispatch ^ | 4/30/6 | Peter Hardin and Tyler Whitley

Sen. George Allen, who has tried to reach out to minority voters in recent years, wore a Confederate flag pin on his shirt collar in a high-school yearbook photo, a national magazine reported yesterday. As a high school student in Palos Verdes, Calif., Allen was seen riding in or driving a Ford Mustang with either a Confederate flag license plate or Confederate flag imagery on the car, The New Republic quoted witnesses as saying.

The Virginia Republican, seeking re-election now and weighing a presidential bid in 2008, was to depart today to co-host a civil-rights history tour for members of Congress to Southside Virginia. The topic is to be progress toward racial reconciliation. Allen staff confirmed that the pin in his yearbook picture depicted a Confederate flag. An Allen aide told the magazine the senator didn't remember a Confederate flag on his Mustang but that it was possible.

As a high school student in California, "I generally bucked authority and the rebel flag was just a way to express that attitude," Allen said in a written statement to the magazine. "Life is a learning experience and I have learned quite a bit in the ensuing 36 years."

He went on to discuss his belief in equal opportunity, his learning from participating in a civil-rights history tour to Alabama several years ago and his proposed Senate legislation to aid minority colleges.

Harris Miller, one of two Democrats seeking the nomination to run against Allen, said yesterday that he found Allen's explanation "pretty disingenuous" considering that while he held state office, he had "a troubling record on minority issues."

Miller cited Allen's issuance while governor of a "highly divisive" Confederate history and heritage month proclamation and his vote, while a member of the House of Delegates, against a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

"We need leaders who will celebrate all that we have in common rather than things that divide us," Miller said.

I doubt i'm mistaken, but it is you who will be sorely mistaken when Allen wins the nod in the 2008 primaries. Rudy won't even bother, frist is a joke, romney will get laughed out of the primaries. I guess that leaves brownback (not a prayer). Of course you have the pence fans on here, but pence wouldn't even run for majority leader because he had small children, do they honestly think in 2 years he will run for the presidency? (not to disparage pence here, i like him alot and would love to see a president pence someday, but hes not a candidate in 2008.

It'll come down to allen and mccain, given mccain couldn't win last time with democrats help hes not going to win this time when democrats are tied up in their own primary. lets not forget that allen has the backing of a lot of talk radio (rush and hannity for example) and his support is growing in the blogosphere. Keep whining and tossing your petty attacks, they will ultimately do little. Have the last word if it makes you happy, i've got better things to do today then beating a dead horse.

Giuliani is to the left of Bill Clinton. He could win a Dem nomination, maybe, but will never win the GOP nomination.

McCain is an anti-freedom freak. He couldn't even win NH now.

Romney is a stonecold liberal. His MA socialized medicine blew open his short-lived masquerade as a 'conservative'.

Any ambitions Sam Brownback had died on the immigration hill.

George Allen's phony positions on abortion, gays, stem cells, guns and the borders disqualify him for consideration.

Mike Pence is a conservative hero. Whether he'll be willing to risk his entire political career (as a House member who has to run every two years) on a presidential run is doubtful.

So, many of us are still looking. Sorry.

Good thing we're still two years out.

Oh, I forgot Frist.

He's better than most on that list, though far from perfect philosophically.

But, in any case, he seems to be lacking the fire in his belly for today's all-out policial warfare.

You worry about me too much.

I'm asking a simple question, Why can't any of you confederate flag defenders condemn the people that did the most damage to the honor of the south, that of course being the Democrats?

Simple logic would say that if you are unwilling to condemn the democrats for what they are clearly guilty of, then you must have a reason that is so airtight it must be shared with anyone that is bothered by your lack of commitment restoring that honor, so why won't you condemn The democrats for dishonoring the south?

My hatred of democrats continues to this very day because they are a thousand times the political worst then any republican could ever be on this issue.

Democrats created the Klu Klux Klan as a political terror weapon, used it to the point where we almost had a second war between the states, used the confedertate flag as the banner of the Klan, and as a symbol of white supermacy in the south turned around and did a 180 when they knew they had lost the south to Reagan and used the symbol they used to show their control over the south to control the black vote in the south saying republicans are racists we're not.

and now they will use it again to destroy George Allen if given the chance, what I want to know is why the defenders of the confederate flag won't say anything about how the democrats have used it and continue to use it today in a way that dishonors the memory of Confederate dead, after all isn't that it their honor they are supposed to be defending, and not the democrats?

Oh yeah. Like that's gonna carry the south...

We're not talking about the South, this is only a Senate race in Virginia. Allen has not declared for higher office. Try to keep up [lol].

Common knowledge of American history, for instance I know that it wasn't Nathan Bedford Forrest that created The Klu Klux Klan but instead it was the Pulaski six or as they are better known The "Immortal Six", all former confederates and all democrats wanting to prevent republicans from mobilizing Blacks to vote in Tennessee, that originally formed the Klan and quickly turned it into the terror wing of the democratic party.

Do you doubt I can prove this with any number of quotes or credits, do you doubt I can prove that democrats have used the confederate flag as a symbol of white supremacy in the south, do you doubt I can prove that democrats today are leveling charges of racism against republicans because of the confederate flag?

I should not need to prove this things to someone that claims to be a defender of the confederate flag to someone that is supposed to know their heritage, to someone that claims to be a defender of the south's honored dead, I should not have to prove to you what you should already know and be angered by....

Are you angered by the way the democrats have done their worst to destroy your heritage for political gain, and if not then why aren't you?

As an amateur vexillologist, I have to point out that the cross of St. Andrew is always a White cross on a blue field

Wrong. The St. Andrews cross used on the Scottish flag was white on BLACK in 1385, in 1503 it was changed to red, and then in 1542 was changed to the blue of today. Southerners chose to use the St. Andrews CROSS (what he was crucified on), not the flag of Scotland.

When anyone tells you that the confederate flag consists of the flags of St. Andrew and St. Patrick joined as one they are ignorant of the truth The southern cross is a corruption of religious symbols, inverted to do the devil's work.

The flag was designed by congressman William Porcher Miles, described in the 38 Southern Historical Society Papers. The cross was carried by "Braveheart" (William Wallace), and was a symbol of resistance to oppression.

And that under Nathan Bedford Forrest's leadership, the Klan not only took positions of local political leadership, but also served to organize veterans of the previous war to help arrange mutual support for their fellows, and which included black Confederate veterans such as Forrest's wartime drovers and teamsters.

I don't know that such membership was limited to Confederate veterans, though that was probably the practical case. But Forrest's view was one of reconciliation if it could be done. And if not, of handing the South's occupiers a hatfull of the trouble they'd started.
