Inside the President's Terrible Poll Numbers
NationalReviewonline ^ | May 9, 2006 | Byron York

Posted on 05/09/2006 8:38:26 AM PDT by Cautor

Bush's ratings appear to be declining in a three-step process. In the first step, Democrats fell off, while smaller numbers of independents peeled away and support remained strong among Republicans. In the second step, Democratic support hit bottom, while independent support fell to ever-lower levels and support among Republicans began to decline. In step three—which appears to be beginning now—independent support appears to be heading closer to the bottom while significant numbers of Republicans are also expressing disapproval.

Congress is at 22% if I recall. There is nothing "steller" about them either.

A look inside the latest numbers suggests several reasons, but it appears the president's stand on immigration is the biggest drag on his support among Republicans—even more damaging than the disapproval caused by rising gas prices.

Someone should be along any moment now to declare Byron York to be a member of the unappeasables. I guess it beats asking of Bush to listen to his base - it's about all he has right now and he's alienating it.

Everything is fine. The Republicans are not in trouble. We will hold both Houses without even lifting a finger. It is just you unappeasables here on FR that are out of touch, those polls mean nothing (except when they show what I believe). .....:) SARCASM OFF///

Unfortunately, you are right. Too many Bush bots that take ANY cricital comment about the President as immediate fodder to hurl insults.

Hopefully, there are enough FREEPERs that can recognize that the President has and is blowing several opportunities to 1) lead our country (which is the job he was "hired" to do) and 2) crush the leftist, scumbag, demoCRAPs.

When you don't lead, you get run over. That's what seems to be happening to the President...or, at least his ratings.

So much for strategery.

Karl Rove to the white phone.

Here's 3 words that Karl Rove seems to have forgotten: Cordon. Flank. Crush.

Oh, and make it public...they do.

And the alternative is ???

For the Congress, who has a GOP majority, to act like a conservative majority rather than as a coalition govt.

It seems to me too much is being made of President Bush's popularity. He is not going to run for office again nor is any of his administration. Seems to me, the more important numbers are those of the Republican house and senate members who WE DEFINITELT want to be reelected. What can be done to raise theirs is the more challenging issue!

IT'S THE IMMIGRATION, STUPID!! - That's what the president's problem is. I've supported this president since 2000 but I'm really tired of the lack of leadership on securing the border. Republicans are really just stupid anymore. The $100 gas rebate was a dumb idea. The "looking into price gouging" is a dumb idea. But not securing the borders with the hopes of gaining votes from Hispanics sympathetic to our illegal amigos really takes the taco.

I'm as conservative as they come and have been rooting for Republicans all my adult life...but if the Goopers lose their majority in the fall it will be their own fault.

He's paying the price for being a decisive leader, because, unfortunately, several of the big and important decisions he's made have been bad for the country.

George Bush lacks the kind of foresight and wisdom great leaders possess. He's a good fellow with a mediocre mind.

If he had foresight, he would have understood that we needed to get Osama and Zawahiri first, and that Iraq could wait.

But, to avenge his Daddy, he charged us in there precipitously, feeling, I suppose, that he had to captitalize on the 911 war fever sweeping the country before it dissipated, and it turned out to be a huge mistake.

How so? Because I used the word "Bush bots".

The President has missed many opportunities. That's a fact, whether you disagree with that or not.

Note, I didn't say, "Aww, schucks the President has blown everything he has done!"

I'm saying that he has missed opportunities (some, golden, even) to bury his scumbag political foes and has not taken advanatage. That's disappointing to me. Again, it's the truth, whether you like it or not.

I don't believe that. You belong on DU.

So we went into Iraq for his Daddy. yeah, right.

Its ok to argue that Iraq shouldn't have been done and that we had enough to handle in Afghanistan but to assert that we went to Iraq for personal reasons is ridiculous.

Admittedly, Iraq hasn't gone as we thought it would, but we are able to do two things at a time.

Credit Texasforever:

Lets talk about Reagan vs. Bush. The easiest way is to name those things that Reagan accomplished that Bush hasn’t.
Reagan signed the first handgun control bill in California history; Bush has signed no anti-gun laws in his political career.

Reagan signed the first Gay-rights legislation in California; Bush has never signed any gay rights legislation.

Reagan broke his promise never to raise taxes with his “revenue enhancement” programs along with the largest FICA increase in history. Bush hasn’t raised taxes in any way .

Reagan cut and run in Lebanon after the first taking of casualties. Bush has stayed the course and held to his promise not to back down.

Reagan appointed 3 liberals and one conservative to the Supreme Court. Bush hass appointed 2 Conservatives and numerous lower court Conservatives.

Reagan talked a good game on abortion but Bush pushed for and got the late term abortion ban passed.

Reagan left office and immediately endorsed the Brady Bill in his first public appearance as an ex-president.

The myth of Reagan is exactly that. A myth. He was a great president because he could say the right things at the right time to make the country feel better. It is beyond dispute that Reagan beats Bush hands down when it comes to communication BUT Bush beats Reagan in every conservative category anyone cares to offer.

And I'll add this: President Reagan gave us amnesty.

Hmm...some might doubt you. I think you may be on to something...

U.S. tipping Mexico to Minuteman patrols

While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are.

According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed.

wooowww. A US government official confirming that 1) migrants have "rights" and 2) we're observing them...and oh 3) the US government is ratting out its own civilan patrols.

Great.

That is exactly correct, I believe many on this forum have been sucked into the talking points from Maureen Dowd, especially when I see some goof ball claim we went into Iraq to "Avenge his Daddy"

I have no reservations saying Bush is doing a fantastic job.

The deficit is going down according to CBO numbers. This is due to the stellar economy stimulated by Bush's tax cuts.

Bush has won two wars-- I am still waiting for someone to step up to this challenge.

These wars changed the lives of 50 million people for the better. They involved countries that neither the Soviet Union or Bush's dad could handle.

I am still waiting for the terror attack on this country that must me imminent since he is such a bad president.

Bush is not just good but awesome. The 65% of the American public are idiots.

Bush did not invent the immigration problem. It has existed for decades in this country and to pretend that it is uniquely his fault is ridiculous.
