Is President Bush done or can he make a comeback? A new Gallup poll has the president's job approval rating at just 31 percent, the lowest ever for him. Only 52 percent of conservatives approve of the job Mr. Bush is doing and that's his base. Only four presidents have scored lower approval ratings since the Gallup poll began tabulating Oval Office performance: Truman, Nixon, Carter and Bush the elder. The question now is: Can Bush the younger regain the confidence of the American people?
Now there's no clear answer to that question. But one thing is certain: Mr. Bush can only turn things around himself. No surrogate can do it and the president must speak directly to the folks because the press isn't going to help him. We all know that.
Here's what the president must do right now:
Go to the Southern border and announce concrete steps to stop the millions of people trying to illegally cross into this country. Whether it's a wall or the military or a massive deployment of Border and Homeland Security agents, securing the border is a must if the president wants to win back conservative support.
Hold monthly press conferences about Iraq only. Open with specific remarks on what progress is being made and answer all questions directly. Demonstrate he has the Iraq situation under control.
Appeal to the oil companies to hold the line on pricing and quickly develop ethanol. We're fighting a War on Terror in this country. Profiteering on a vital necessity cannot be allowed. Get tough with big oil, Mr. President.
Stop the spending madness. Cut back discretionary spending by 10 percent now by issuing an executive order. Push to make tax cuts permanent.

Thank YOU.
I caught that part of your post ... could you explain why you want to support anyone who doesn't want to enforce our immigration laws? or any other laws for that matter ?
I could understand if your post said you would support candidates who want to change the laws to become more lenient on immigration, that is one side of this debate. But I can't understand your supporting lawmakers' not enforcing the laws they've passed.
I share your frustration, but the Democrats, starting 1960, basically taxed and socially legislated the middle class out of existience. It will take yet another GENERATION of solid conservative government to re-establish a middle class. Likewise illegal immigration is an issue that has developed over the last 30 years....a successful, productive solution is not available with the snap of one presidential finger.
True enough, but we can make our voices heard -- make 'em LOUD. And maybe, when all is said and done, that won't make a difference. But if we don't make the effort, we can't complain about the result.
(Perry is an absolute disgrace.)
I know who you will vote for.
Well the good news is that we won't have the farce of a President looking for his "legacy" again. For better or for worse, Bush has made his mark, what matters now, is what becomes of his projects. He may still surprise us, but he doesn't have to rush around aimlessly looking for something to make us remember him.
Since when did all of the Republican party become a single-issue party? The Constitution Party is looking mighty nice right now.
And please, don't even bother with the idiotic argument that my vote would be wasted. A vote can never be wasted.
Anyone who thought when they voted for Bush, they were voting for Pat Buchanan when it came to Mexican immigration, must have not been paying attention in 2000.
John Conyers shouldn't be put in charge of a toliet stall.
I doubt if Bush will ever change - no comeback.
Does this mean people here are not entitled to their own opinions and feelings and or did we lose our 1st amendments rights while I was sleeping?
You are absolutely right-on about the alternative choice.
Before the 2000 election a friend asked me how I would vote. I said that, as to Mr. Bush, I would find much to disagree with. Mr. Gore, on the other hand, made no sense at all.
My opinion has not changed. Ditto with the upcoming mid-term GOP vs. Democrats.
I have prayed for him since the first time I voted for him. Then I sent the WH many letters begging him before the second time I voted for him, that this issue would decimate him. I asked him and every member of his cabinet to please talk to him and tell him. Know what? I still pray for him because someone close to him has been sent in his admin to bring him down and they are successfully accomplishing that goal.

"So if a freeper wants the borders closed they are a troll?"
Apparently so.
I am shocked by the number of so called conservatives who want to give a free pass to our government's total inaction on this issue.
I am, and have been a true conservative for many years.
BUT I WILL NOT VOTE FOR A GOVERNMENT THAT WILL NOT PERFORM ONE OF THE FEW BASIC FUNCTIONS THAT GOVERNMENT WAS ORIGINALLY CHARTERED TO DO.
To all you "let's give GWB a pass on this" conservatives, I strongly suggest that you move to get some action on this instead of assuming other people are "trolls".
This is a dangerous division of our party, but at some point you HAVE to draw the line!
If not, what is the next thing we give a pass on????
I doubt if Bush will ever change - no comeback.
