(CNN) -- In a new poll comparing President Bush's job performance with that of his predecessor, a strong majority of respondents said President Clinton outperformed Bush on a host of issues.

The poll of 1,021 adult Americans was conducted May 5-7 by Opinion Research Corp. for CNN. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Respondents favored Clinton by greater than 2-to-1 margins when asked who did a better job at handling the economy (63 percent Clinton, 26 percent Bush) and solving the problems of ordinary Americans (62 percent Clinton, 25 percent Bush). (Watch whether Americans are getting nostalgic for the Clinton era -- 1:57)

On foreign affairs, the margin was 56 percent to 32 percent in Clinton's favor; on taxes, it was 51 percent to 35 percent for Clinton; and on handling natural disasters, it was 51 percent to 30 percent, also favoring Clinton.

Moreover, 59 percent said Bush has done more to divide the country, while only 27 percent said Clinton had.

When asked which man was more honest as president, poll respondents were more evenly divided, with the numbers -- 46 percent Clinton to 41 percent Bush

Bush's economic policies have a more active role in the general performance of the economy than Clinton's, whose primary contribution to economic policy was to "let it ride." Mostly because the Republican Congress held Clinton in check.

The "laisez-faire" policies Clinton's administration was forced into accepting as a compromise with Congress resulted in the abject lack of fiscal responsibility in the private sector that led the big bust in 2000-2001. Heck, any reasonable investor could see that the tech boom was a house of cards in 1999. (Clintonian views toward corruption also encouraged public and private corruption, that has led to the last 5 years of busts by the DOJ of both. With none of the protections of being a member of the ruling party that Clinton offered to Democrats during his 8 years.)

Federal economic policy must be dynamic, ever adapting to the changing global markets, and local shifts in production, and industry diversity. Small business should be the primary focus of economic expansion, as the backbone of our economy is comprised of small businesses. Federal economic policy must also aim for the smallest possible footprint, with the least regulation, and an aim toward ensuring the framework of increased competition in all areas of domestic industry, and less protectionism.

(I may be accused of being a globalist, but if we can't out compete the world, we have no business calling ourselves capitalists. Even against the odds, we should take pride in the fact that American ingenuity has outlasted and outcompeted every major economic competitor in the world, often absorbing and coopting the competition out of the simple fact that the competition moves here because it is cheaper and safer to do business in America than in a country where taxes are high, and threats of government interference are even higher.)

I am surprised at two of the areas for sure. Can you believe that people think that Clinton was better in taxes! Second, that he was better at National Security. I can't for the life of me understand those numbers. Even if these numbers are skewed, could they be by 30 percent? I am worried about Americans who are answering these questions. I don't know why people think that paying more taxes is a good thing.

Which man would you say was more honest as president?

President Bush 26% 5172 votes

President Clinton 74% 14878 votes
Total: 20050 votes

That is right I heard this too. I was stunned at this because I do believe that President Bush is pretty brutily honest. I mean if you can say something and piss off the entire public (especially your base) you gotta be pretty honest IMHO. President Clinton always wanted to tell us what we wanted to hear and then do something else. Plus I can't say that I hate Clinton because I don't hate anybody, but I don't think I will ever forget him pointing at me on national TV. That was a very telling event. After finding out that his words were incorrect, I felt kicked in the stomach. As a Christian, I do forgive, but not forget...

Poll: Clinton outperformed Bush

Yes, but unlike Clinton, you feel comfortable sitting on the same upholstry when Bush leaves the room.

The neurolinguistic programming campaign of the Democrats aided and abetted by the MSM has worked. They have said "Bush lied" so often that for this "sample" at least it is the truth. Same with the economy.

There will be plenty right here on FR that will believe the poll numbers and then repeat them over and over on every post that comes up.

On klintons first day in office GDP was growing at 4.3%, on his last day, it was staggering along at less than .5%, having actually went backward in the 3rd quarter of the previous year.

On klintons first day, the market was growing normally, on his last day, the dow had just wound up losing 8oo points in the past year, and the nasdaq had been cut nearly in two.

On klintons first day, sodom was freshly whipped and in his place, on klintons last day, sodom had not even had inspectors in 4 years. Also on klintons last day, alqeda was in our country studying and planning to more efficiantly kill our women and children.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that they decided to conduct this particular poll question when Bush's popularity is at an all-time low. When his numbers start to go back up i wonder if they'll ask this question again?

This is really upsetting. Bush is being used as a scapegoat. Clinton passed all the difficult decisions to Bush.

Clinton wanted to preserve his legacy, high poll numbers and treat terrorism as a law enforcement problem. Bush has to clean up the mess that Clinton created. US interest were being attacked overseas and he did nothing except lobbed bombs at al Queda camps. Hit a asprin factory in Sudan in 1998 and UN inspectors could not return to Iraq after Desert Fox in 1998. Clinton didn't want to get too aggressive with North Korea and even gave them cold water reactors if they didn't weaponized nuclear weapons but they broke their agreement.

How much of an impact would you say the "Contract For America" had on our economy? I came to work today to find this stinking article put on my desk by a liberal that works here. I always ask these maroons "What exactly did Clinton do to foment a healthy economy?" As you can imagine the blank stares are fun to watch.

This poll brings me back to pre-September 11th. After years of not understanding how the American people's sentiments in poll after poll could be that far afield from my own, September 11 caused everyone to think, well, like Americans again. We were all, proud of our country and joined by a common cause. I could see the tide turning against the pervert we had been subjected to for eight years.

I thought the perspective of history had already changed the opinions of the dopes who respond to these polls. I guess not...VERY DISAPPOINTING!
