TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE(Michelle Malkin opines)

President Bush is continuing the homeland security dog-and-pony charade in his quest to deliver a massive "guest worker"/amnesty plan to the open-borders lobby. A few weeks ago, Bush's Department of Homeland Security put on a bogus performance of Get Tough Theater with a series of politically timed immigration raids...which, as I predicted, simply resulted in more catch and release of illegal aliens nationwide.

This new last-minute stunt to sprinkle National Guard troops on the border--temporarily, of course, to appease Mexican President Vicente Fox--is more transparent than the Scotch tape used to hold together our dilapidated border fences. (That's only a slight exaggeration.)

For all the new tough talk, these additional troops will be barred from actually doing what needs to be done: guarding the border. President Bush is already bowing and scraping to Mexico over the plan before he's even officially announced it. More details via WaPo:

Officials suggested their mission would be to play a supporting role by providing intelligence, training, transportation, construction and other functions, while leaving the actual guarding of the 2,000-mile line separating the United States and Mexico to the Border Patrol. The National Guard would be a stopgap force until the federal government could hire civilian contractors to take over administrative and support functions from the Border Patrol, freeing more agents to actually hunt for immigrants slipping into the country. Hold up. It's been nearly five years since the Sept. 11 attacks. It's taken the Bush administration this long to acknowledge the need to hire more civilian contractors to relieve the Border Patrol of administrative and support functions?

Only now, on the day the Senate revisits his favored, faltering pet proposals for mass amnesty, does he find it important enough to send a show of military non-force down to the border--

Hi, I hate to tell you this... but first one must "define" the labels. What is "Latino," what is "Hispanic," and this case, the flag you see is from Mexico.

I was born in South America, came is 68, I am a Republican, Social conservative U.S. citizen... don't' assume that all people of "Hispanic ancestry" think the same way!... we are very DIFFERENT!... We are not like other groups who vote 90% for the Rats. So, statistically speaking...we'll brake 50 50 in the long run.

Take care :)

Then we need to get on them as well. Or at least the Voters in the State need to.

"I don't understand how people can even THINK the Latinos will vote Republican? The Latino movement hates George Bush.."

Follow the money. The republicans are willing to risk their political future for current profits. The draw of cheap labor from illegals is much stronger than you'd imagine. And the lobbys are powerful.

And, in an interesting bit of rationalization, I've heard and seen it stated that Latinos share family values with conservatives, therefore, they can be attracted to the republican party. HA! Liberalism and socialism tends to thrive among the under-educated and the poor. The illegals will vote democrat. (Yes, and they'll be illegal when they cast those votes).

"Nope. I'll be here telling you to shut your mouth when you complain about the Democrats that YOU elected."

Yeah, well I've caught a couple of your posts, and I am pretty sure the democrats will hurt you far more than they hurt me. So, it's a win/win for me.

Good points.

I don't feel the issue is one that interests Bush. I guess I am one of the "Bushbots" around here (meaning: I don't call him Jorge and don't think he is the Evil Illegal Immigrant Overlord), but I think so much of what's written here misses the point.

And one of the points is, I just don't think he GETS it. That is not saying he is evil, stupid, in league with the loathsome Vincente Fox. No President "gets" every issue--I certainly don't think Reagan got this issue or terrorism/hostages, the Middle East/Lebanon.

I just think the President needs to look at the issue and address it properly. I don't think it calls for an end to Republican control of Congress, particularly with that pack of wackjobs called Democrats sniffing around.

Your reply to me demonstrates a complete lack of seriousness

You're right .. I'm just tried of the all or nothing I keep hearing over and over and over

When you decide to be serious about the matter, read Sessions' analysis of the legislation

I listened the Senator's speech on the Senate Floor .. in fact I watch the Senate almost every day they are in session

And I've never disagreed with the Senator .. in fact there are a number of Senators that agree with him and have tried to add amendments to correct that stupid McCain/Kennedy bill only to be blocked by objections from Harry Reid and the other Dems

Bush supports drug runners now ??

That is the effect of his free trade across the borders policy so indirectly he does.

"Work hard buddy. There's a fellow from El Salvador crossing the border right now that has his eyes on your job. "

You need to see the bigger picture. Professionals, and business owners have nothing to fear from illegals, (in terms of making a living). In fact, illegals are a financial enhancement for them. (If you ignore the strain on social systems and the ultimate tax hikes that will come about).

Malkin lost the respect of a lot of people when she said that all Muslims in the United States, even those who are natural born Americans, should be put into concentration camps for the rest of their lives. It didn't matter if they were law abiding citizens, they were to be thrown into camps without a trial or any form of appeal

That's totally unacceptable.

I would like the link to that please. Thanks.

Agreeing to put the NG down on the border like many wanted is now inaction and downright rebelious ??

Did he not tell Fox "temporarily". Please explain how the long term problem of millions of people trying to cross our borders illegally is going to be solved by a temporary fix designed to pacify the American voter "temporarily"

Like Frist's $100 gas rebate check this smells of arrogance and the belief that the American voter can be manipulated or bought.

It wouldn't surprise me to see another immigration "rebate" check proposal to keep us quiet for awhile.

I'm as conservative as you can get but this immigration thing is ridiculous. Why wasn't she screaming and hollering about it 2 years ago...4 years ago?
You cannot tell me it all started with the anti american organized protests.
And I can hardly wait to hear the screaming and hollering tonight after Bush addresses this issue that started 20 years ago, thanks to Reagan!

The last time I looked, the Federal government set immigration policy. The states have been bearing an inordinate amount of the burden for a long time. Some governors have even sent bills to Washington detailing the costs to their states,- with no hope of reimbursement- but to make a point of the burden they've borne.
There's plenty of blame to go around, both Republican and Democrat. It's been a problem spanning several administrations.
However, if we had 11 million people coming over the border carrying AK-47s, everyone would call the problem what it actually is- an invasion! The fact they're unarmed is of no consequence.
Washington sets immigration policy and is supposed to be primarily tasked with enforcing it. Our government has failed miserably in this! President Bush's seeming determination to give away the United States to Mexico is dead wrong, no matter what his reasoning. He's about to get a serious reminder from the rest of us just how wrong he is.
And I voted for him- twice.

Thank you, Michelle Malkin, for speaking up about the illegal immigration issue. If all the leaks about the content of the president's speech tonight are accurate, I will probably not be happy.

We don't need a dog and pony show, we need real, effective actions to stop the illegal immigrant tidal wave.
