President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

I agree that we shouldn't accept anything other than a total closure of the border..

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" Ronald Reagan, 1987

Interesting tagline you have there!

I guess the new one would be, "Mr. Bush, build up this wall!"? :-)

This was no issue anywhere except with border states 3 years ago.
The border states have been going ballistic and are even more so now and the regular states have started to pick this up as well.

This has now become a real major national issue.
This will not go away and IMO anyone thinking it will is wrong.
This is going to get worse and worse until you get a revolt IMO.

These people cost many CA billions or more a year to educate, they close down our hospitals, clog our streets with non-insured drivers.
They are making our disabled military heroes homeless compared to illegals with a baby citizen over the issue of housing.
Illegals get the free housing over the disabled Americans.

This is all BS and is going to blow up in Republicans faces if they go for this.

Unfortunately, "guest workers" came in and undercut the prevailing wage for hard working high school kids. Therefor, those jobs aren't available anymore.

BS, any pimply faced kid can walk into any McDonalds and get a job, but you have to lie to keep your hyperbole going.

"Why would he care about the Dem response? Your response will be much more anti-Bush, anti-Rove than theirs."

No, just much more coherent.

My statement was made in the pursuit of a general discussion beyond immigration. Sorry.

After much reflection and reviewing all the options, alternatives, repercussions and hostilities, I've come to the conclusion that I'd be just as happy if we don't get any kind of immigration bill passed. Let the pols fight it out for the next several years.(/sarcasm)

I think he will instead have all Americans taking up German.
I do NOT think this will turn out real well.

But there's another troop formula, ala Janet Napalitano, designed to win public opinion points without really changing anything, to hoodwink the House into going along with the Senate's grotesque amnesty plan, and to leave the southern border open to new waves of illegal aliens in order to drive down American wages for employers and Wall Street.

That formula calls for a few thousand National Guard to be deployed to the border on a short-term temporary basis, with a generic mission to "assist the Border Patrol". It would call for new technology and infrastructure, with no commitment to time certain or specifics. It would call for an increased Border Patrol, to the tune of maybe 1500 a year, with two years of training before being allowed to enter the field.

And that formula would allow waves of millions of new illegal immigrants, lured by promises of amnesty from the President and the Senate, to continue swarming across our southern border in record numbers for years to come.

We will all be waiting Monday night to discover which plan the President has in mind for America.

Not sure what is suppose to be a surprise - the text of the speech has already been released to the press (as is normal and customary). Local talk show host was reading exerpts from it ----

About the only thing new is the call for National Guard troops on the border. But after all is said-and-done, it really is just a consolation to ge this amnesty debacle passed.

I sure hope congress doesn't fall for it. Militarizing the border should be mandatory WITHOUT amnesty. Round up the illegals and ship them out ASAP.

Makes u wonder how long the Washington elites would live, work and play in Washington if the only protective measures were drones and virtual fences.

Hope he doesn`t use this line...

"The job Americans won`t do"

Let`s see... I was born in NYC, lived here all my life.

The past 20 years I`ve had jobs that involved...

Landscaping

Office cleaning

Construction

now Taxi driving

...ask me again about the jobs Americans won`t do, and ask me again how much I like competely with damn illegal F&*^S!!!!

"Secure our borders..."

Unless Bush and the Congress address that aspect of the issue as primacy, I simply will not bother with the "debate".

I am a life-long conservative and a "qualified" Bush supporter.

However, on this issue -- and to a degree, the President's failure to maintain control over the Congress -- I give Bush UNSATISFACTORY marks.

So, I expect nothing of significance from this speech -- nor, from the Congress this term -- which will credibly address the problem.

Accordingly, UNLIKE many of my Conservative friends, I will hold my nose and vote for the GOP this fall.

However, I predict that many of my Conservative and Libertarian friends will NOT go to the polls, out of disgust. And, I submit that a Democrat takeover ofo the House is not only a probability -- but essentially deserved!

POX on both houses! And, Bush!!! He is a huge disappointment.
