N.Y. Poll: Hillary May Not Carry State in 2008

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton could have trouble carrying her own state if she runs for president in 2008 and Republicans nominate either former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani or Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a poll of New York voters reported Tuesday.

Lee Miringoff of Marist College's Institute for Public Opinion said the statewide poll, conducted in conjunction with New York City's WNBC-TV, is bad news for the former first lady given concerns nationally among some Democrats about her "electability."

In a theoretical matchup for the 2008 presidential race, the WNBC/Marist poll found Giuliani favored by 50 of New York voters to 46 percent for Clinton. The poll had Clinton at 48 percent and McCain at 45 percent.

"The question often centers around, can she be elected, can she carry a red state?" said the Marist pollster. "These numbers suggest that even right here in her own backyard the bluest of the blue Rudy Giuliani and Senator John McCain would give her a run for her money."

In New York, there are 5 million Democrats and 3 million Republicans, and the state has not been carried by a Republican presidential contender since Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.

Clinton did better 58 percent to 36 percent against Gov. George Pataki, who like Giuliani is eyeing the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.

Marist's telephone poll of 735 registered voters was conducted May 1-7 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Polls have shown Clinton well ahead of her potential Republican opposition in her bid this year for a second Senate term and national surveys have her as the front-runner for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

In the WNBC/Marist poll, 49 percent of New Yorkers said Clinton should run for president in 2008, but 66 percent said it was unlikely she could be elected. Fifty-one percent said Giuliani should run, but 52 percent said it was unlikely he could be elected president. Seventy-four percent of New Yorkers polled said Pataki should not run for president.

I think she's totally unelectable myself.

I agree. Whatever she and her party may envision, she and her so-called husband both look o-l-d, tired and very worn. ANY young vigorous candidate who can string together some words and who will lock down the border would clean her/their clocks.

I LOVE Giuliani. Seriously, I love the man. I'm pro-life, Guiliani understands that activist judges have no place in a democracy.
If McCain gets the nomination, I WILL vote third party.

LOL. Humor is the only way I can deal with the absolute terror I feel in my bones at the thought that she could even make a run at the White House.

"He's never going to be President. With his views on killing babies and gay 'rights', I've got more chance of winning the nomination!"

Why don't we all calm down and wait for the Primaries.
From what I am reading of the tea leaves, Ruddy will probably to run.
At which time you can exercise your democratic right to vote for or against him. :)

"If Rudy is serious about making a strong contribution, removing Hitlery from the Senate is surely it."

Again, if Ruddy wants to be President (I think he does), why on earth would he go stand for the US Senate and ruin his chances?

No one has been elected from the US Senate as president for over 44 years, and neither will Hitlery.

If Sick Willie's prospective role becomes an object of ridicule, we won't have to lift a finger to stop Her Heinous.

Then again, Her Heinous may arrange for Billy to have a convenient heart attack and croak, leaving her as the first 'grieving' widow to run for the presidency.

The Assyrian collection, excavated over 100 years around Basra and Baghdad, is the best in the hemisphere, if not the work. The ancient Hebrew collection from Megiddo is also unequalled IMHO.

BTW: The Tiki Room is gone, replaced by a new Checkerboard Lounge.

The Tiki was near 53rd Street, close to the Metra Station. It was a combination Chinese Restaurant/Jazz Club.

Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap is still there, although Jimmy Wilson himself passed on about six years ago.

If the DemocRATS don't win New York, I doubt they could win the election.

I also bear in mind that her equally nasty husband , won with just 43% of the vote in 1992, and never won even close to 50% of the popular vote ever...

Well, 49.23% was pretty close in 1996. But he indeed didn't reach 50.

Just another poll demanding the GOP nominate McCain.

I'd rot in the gutters of hell before I'd vote for McCain. I actually think Hillary has more balls...

Rudy would make a great leader and an orator. Just what the country needs.

I'd be very surprised if Illinois doesn't vote Democrat in 2008.

"The question often centers around, can she be elected, can she carry a red state?"

Hillary cannot carry a red state, which means she will have to pull a Gore/Kerry and try to steal a red state. MY bet is going back to Ohio, although New Mexico and Virginia look good also.

If I was DNC chair, I would be pushing Warner/Richardson.
