US 'must close Guantanamo camp'
BBC News World Edition ^ | Friday, 19 May 2006 | BBC News World Edition

The US should close the Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba and any secret "war on terror" detention facilities abroad, a United Nations report has said.

The UN Committee against Torture said that detaining persons in such conditions was a violation of the UN Convention against Torture.

It also urged the US to put in place "immediate measures" to eradicate torture of detainees by its troops.

The committee's report follows a hearing in early May into US conduct.

"The state party should cease to detain any person at Guantanamo Bay and close the detention facility," the 11-page report said.

I got a better idea. Evict those U.N. SOBs from that prime real estate in New York City, and let them set up their NEW headquarters at Gitmo. Put all those Third World scumbags and terrorists in more appropriate surroundings.

Kofi Annan with women's panties over his head.

It works.

Hey... You didn't even let someone else bring up the secret brothels in Africa.

Shame on you!

(Secret brothels unfortunately are the least of the UN's perversions.)

OK, were they opposed to Saddams prisons, how about the rape and torture of innocents in S. Africa or maybe a little look into the arrests of 'nonconforming' citizens in China? What a *ing joke. I guess we'll lie down once again.

I'm on the side that say's we keep the U.N. exactly where it is because sending them anywhere else is just asking for them to get into mischief without us being able to put on the brakes.

The U.S. without the U.N. would be better off, but the world without the U.S. in the U.N. would be much worse off.

"...but the world without the U.S. in the U.N. would be much worse off."

I doubt that ... must of the "civilized" countries would just leave the UN if we left it first.

It's good to know that the rest of the world is doing so well regarding human rights that the UN can direct its attention to Gitmo...

Do we HAVE to keep the U.N. in the United States?

We have fed and pampered that collection of over-aged, spoiled, perverted hypocrites since the place was founded.

Doesn't some other country want some of this fun?

Hey Beijing! How about you? Think of all the nifty things you have in store for you if YOU become the next host of the United Nations.

What you'd be left with is a U.N. dominated by Russia and China, leading around a pack of bloody dictators... All of them anti-American.

That's a recipe for disaster. As it is, both Russia and China have to build their extra-marital relationships outside the confines of the U.N. and thus their attempts lack the legitimacy that even a reduced U.N. would lend. Given the direction of the EU, much of the so-called civilized socialist countries in Europe will remain part of the U.N., and further tilt the scales against us.

We need to use the U.N., rather than let them use us. For that, we need to keep Republicans in the White House who have a strong disdain of the world body, but also a deep distrust that extends to keeping the U.N. as close as possible so we can check them whenever possible. I don't doubt that Bush knew about the corruption of the Oil for Food program prior to proposing to invade Iraq as part of the WoT. Actually, I'm pretty sure he was briefed on it right after taking office, since Clinton had to have known too.

The U.N. must be kept a close eye on, and that means keeping them where they are so we can ride herd on them. The only problems arise when we elect a foreign policy push over like Clinton or Carter. A simple fact that we're going to have to prevent in the future by supporting the next closest conservative candidate regardless of how much we disagree with him or her.

We MUST do no such thing.

Gitmo is the BEST environment for the task it serves.

If we don't kill them ALL on the battlefield or at capture (some think that is a good idea, I don't...for intelligence reasons only) then we MUST have something like Gitmo.

If we had it here in the states or anywhere else, people would be outside it with signs and such.

Whoever thought of using Gitmo was a genius.

You make some good points. I've been in favor of kicking the UN out of the US because they infringe on our Constitutional sovereignty, but I've never looked at it this way before.

I have a few edits for this one:

The US should close the Guantanamo Turtle Bay camp in Cuba Manhattan and any secret "war on terror" detention facilities abroad throw out the corrupt, tin-pot dictators on their asses, a United Nations report a FreeRepublic.com Poster has said.

There, thats better.

Oh, we're probably 100% in agreement that the world would be better off without the U.N. or the World Bank.

The sorry fact of the matter is that we can't just dissolve the U.N. and a U.N. without the U.S. is a great danger to the world.

Imagine a U.N. with no U.S. to block China and Russia.

If the U.N. could be dissolved, that would be the best course. The result would be international anarchy for a short time while new alliance organizations are formed, but it would be a far more honest system than the current U.N.

But allowing the U.N. to remain as an organization without U.S. involvement would be a veritable recipe for disaster. Either dissolve it, or keep it close so we can breathe flames down its neck.

Yes but we need to keep constant subtle pressure on them. They need to always know who really is boss. Sort of like being a parent with teenagers at home.

They should be at a stage to be ready to learn for themselves.. but still need to have the respect of whose house they still live in.

You are never going to throw them out but they still need that doubt that you could and might.

I think its the third world that is leading the UN no. I havent heard the UN attack China for harvesting organs. They get all excited by Gitmo, but they dont askN. Korea how many they have locked in Gulags. They are useless as tits on a boar hog.
