BATON ROUGE, La. At least three people were killed and two others injured this morning by a gunman who opened fire at a church in north Baton Rouge, police said.
A manhunt was on for a suspect identified as Anthony Bell, 25, of Baton Rouge, who fled the church after abducting his wife and one of his three children, an infant, from the building, Sgt. Charles Armstong said.
Bell's two older children were found safe at their residence, Armstrong said.
Police received the call on the shooting around 10 a.m., around the time church services would normally be close to ending. "I'm assuming church was going on when the shooting occurred," Armstrong said.
Police said Bell drove off in a tan Chevrolet Impala.
The church is inside an old warehouse in a non-residential area of north Baton Rouge. It is surrounded by warehouses and various commercial businesses including a beauty shop, a bar and a guitar store.
Louisiana is a quagmire. I say bring the troops home!
I have never felt the need to carry. But, things like this make me say, hmmmmmm...
In many places it's illegal to carry in church while services are going on. Even in those places some of us know that wolves don't care about safety and sanctuary for the sheep. All the wolves care is that the sheep remain defenseless. In fact, the wolves are delighted if the sheep THINK they're safe, and are eager to take advantage when the sheep pass laws insisting that the sheepdogs disarm themselves.
I'd say= this: decide if you are a sheep or a guardian dog. If the latter, then learn how to use a weapon, sell your coat, and buy one. Get whatever permits your locality requires. Be on guard. It is a noble thing to sacrifice and train to protect the defenseless, even if they chose to be defenseless.
The murder rate and other nonsense is increasing in our small town. She does not know about that.
Houston is establishing a bitter experience with these
Yup. I heard a local ADA comment that about half of all crimes he's prosecuting right now have a NOLA-migrant at the root.
MM
You're WAYYYYY out ahead of everything.
the dead wife was apparently a relative of the dead pastor.
This has a family problem written all over it.
Same reason I do.
You should know that crime existed in BR before Katrina.
Can we wait for the jokes?
Crap. How awful.
Glad they got the perp but it's not much of a condolence.
"If Church IS (rather than merely ought to be) a place of safety and sanctuary, it's because rough men and women risk harm to keep it that way.

I agree, but have you considerered the tactical difficulty of getting a clear shot in a church full of panic-stricken worshipers? Not only can you not miss, you must not have a thru-and-thru that hits someone else.
According to this link the perp might not be the dad of all three kids, so you may be right.
yeah...
I feel for the kids. To us, she's a victim of this act, but to those kids, she's mom.
Woah! Motive yet unknown.
They had some incidents here (Jacksonville Fl) a couple of years back, where congregations were being robbed when the offering was being taken up.
After about two such incidents, smaller churches began having congregants volunteer for security (armed) during services. I don't know the legality of it, but as far as I know, nothing was said about it and the churches haven't had an incident since.
A Right permitted is a mere privilege and the NRA's stock-in-trade, dispensations. Remember the Catholic Church and dispensations?
It's against the law in Louisiana to carry in "any church, synagogue, mosque or similar place of worship."

"Ask me why I carry in church."
Can you believe some states actually ban CCW in places of worship?
Yep. Mine does during services of worship.
I didn't mean it as a joke so much as a bitter commentary on the media which would argue both to deny the people in this church or our soldiers in Iraq what they need to defend themselves.
