I have to admit. I wasn't going to do any threads this year. They take a lot out of me emotionally...visiting painful memories like this.

But...I just went and watched my 11 year old daughter in a school musical about America. It reminded me that we are here ONLY because of the courage of those who came before...and that MEMORIAL DAY is the one day set aside to remember them..to tell them Thank You.

I am not a writer (as I have been reminded time after time on FR)..but I'm here and will stand my post until relieved.

Dedicated to Ricky and surf bums everywhere.

Yes, millions will remember. I had 4 cousins in Nam. We will go to the memorial airshow in central Missouri this weekend and take my 84 Y.O. father-in-law in his wheelchair. He has Parkinson's now and is unable to walk much. He too was reluctant to go to war in Europe, but entered the airforce and became a B-17 pilot flying 16 missions over Germany in late 1944 and early 1945. He was shot down and served 6 months in a POW camp manned by the Russians but survived. He was a kid in war but did as he was told to the best of his ability and he is still alive and he remembers.

What do you mean you're not a writer? You're that, and a whole lot more.

But you and I both know that isn't the point of your stories at this time of year.

And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing them to us.

I'll be at the Old Post Cemetery on Ft. Huachuca Monday morning. I won't be alone.

God Bless you for all you do, Redrock.

Redrock......thank you for telling us all the reason there is a MEMORIAL DAY. Your friend and soldier RICKY will be remembered EVERY Memorial Day by this vet, along with those that I knew.

A touching yet all too realistic story of the youth we lost in a war that has ruined the national psyche, so much so, that 30 years later most in our nation believe we can NEVER win another protracted war.

Thank you for your service doc! I am proud to have served with men like you.

Thanks for your mention of Ricky. You have helped us remember his name. You have helped us remember what this Memorial Day is all about.

I must say that this is a day of reverence with me. As such the holiday effect kind of detracts IMO.

I don't like the sales. I don't like the special events that distract us from what the day should be all about.

Each of us should set aside some quiet time and contemplate the price that has been paid for our freedoms. We should renew our determination to make sure that sacrifice was not made in vain.

Have a good Memorial Day. Thanks for your service. Thanks to all the Rickys whose names we don't remember.

Thank you for remembering Ricky and all the other brave men and women who have given their all for this country. Those who are gone and those who have given a large part of their lives.

There is no way possible for us to ever thank them, it is the very least that we can do to take one day a year and remember what they have done.

To all of you, thank you for your service, you are the best this country can produce.

Thanks, redrock, for remembering Ricky. I'll be in DC in a couple of weeks and always leave yellow roses from Texas for my cousin, Daryl, at panel 4E. Let me know what panel Ricky's name is on and I'll leave some for him as well.

God bless our Veterans and may God continue to bless America!
