Kennedy Drops Opposition to Nantucket Wind Farm

Ted Kennedy has reportedly dropped his long-running blocking of the turbine wind farm that was proposed for Nantucket Sound in 1997. The turbines were estimated to be able to supply Cape Cod with most of their electricity needs. He is reported to have said that he will allow the Coast Guard to decide whether it should be built.

The Coast Guard decides such things? Call me cynical, but it seems more likely that he has secured assurances rom others that they will block the wind farm for him.

No, they ARE economically viable and will likely be built. Renewables aren't the be-all/end-all, but if they help wean us off of foreign oil, all the better.

He is playing to the audience, while stabbing the project in the back. The Dem voters are just too dim to know it!

It is my understanding that many wind farm proposals for power generating plants are uneconomic - meaning they do not pay there way, even if they were subsidized.

Regarding foreign oil, the bulk of foreign and domestic oil is used for fuel for cars, planes, etc. Only a fraction, less than 5%, goes into power plants.

IMO, wind farms are window dressing and band aids for the environmentalists. Until they look too close and then complain of birds getting killed.

Perhaps you and I can look at the cost numbers in say five or ten years if they ever build a set out on the Cape.... ;)

And accordingly, very little oil goes to electrical power generation.

No...you are quite wrong on that. Wind farms are a LOUSY idea. They provide very expensive electricity when and where it is not needed. Only COAL provides cheap on-demand electricity where and when needed.
