Michigan Town Heats Up For 666 Party

(AP) HELL, Michigan -- This Tuesday, it'll be a hot time in Hell.

Tuesday marks the once-in-a-millennium date of 6-6-06. It's a spot on the calendar watched carefully in the small Michigan town named Hell, about 60 miles west of Detroit.

The date comes close to the number 666, which signifies the devil in the Bible's Book of Revelation. In anticipation, radio stations as far away as San Diego and Seattle have been raffling off trips to Hell. Live entertainment and a costume contest are also planned.

One local businessman is especially fired up. He's selling souvenir mugs and T-shirts marked "666," which also come with a letter stating the owner spent June 6, 2006 in Hell.

Though the exact reasons are in dispute, the Michigan hamlet has been officially known as Hell since 1841.

It's not really the date from Revelations because they goofed the calendar a few hundred years after it was written. Dionysius Exiguus ("Dennis the short") concocted the A.D. dating for Pope John 1st about 525AD. He tried to count back so his system would start with the birth of Christ, but he overlooked counting a few things so we now think He was born c. 4-6BC as currently dated. 6-6-2006 from His birth thus really happened a few years ago, perhaps close to 911.

There is a good reason to celebrate on June 6. It's the birthday of George Deukmejian (R), California's last decent governor.

Every August they have a half-marathon in Hell, preferably on a nice hot day. When I was in high school I always wanted to make it over there so I could get the t-shirt from the race. "I ran through Hell." :-)

All I can say is the winner is in for a very large disappointment...

Probably not. As Mark Twain observed, all of the most interesting people will surely go to hell, and heaven will be boredom beyond hell.

It occurs every 100, not 1000, years.

How many years between 2006 and 3006, 100 or 1000?

"On Tuesday "The Omen - 2006" will have its US release. I am sorry, I must be getting oldER. There is no way in Damien Thorn's Hell that Julia Stiles could ever play role that once played by Lee Remick, NEVER!"

I agree wholeheartedly. Both she, and Gregory Peck were great in the original. I'll never forget that slomo scene with the falling goldfish bowl and Lee! Billie Whitelaw also did a fantastically creepy job playing Mrs. Baylock the nanny from hell.

"664"

If we agree that "666" is the number of The Beast, then it logically flows that obviously "664" is the neighbor of The Beast.

LOL - I just remember I took an apologetics class and the theme on this night was prophesy. It seems there were two schools of thought on the number of the beast - some said 666 and others said 664, then other gave a different number ... I think it funny when some fundamentalist Christians get all upset if they somehow wind up with 666 on their phone number or license plate or any other gov't number assigned to them. I read where this one lady was ostracized from her church because her license plate had 666 on it ....
