Poland's Bigoted Government [Usual Suspects Barf Alert]
New York Times ^ | 6/11/06 | NYT Editorial board

Posted on 06/11/2006 1:22:33 AM PDT by Oshkalaboomboom

Some formerly Communist countries that eagerly joined the European Union are balking at the social policies that come with democracy. They are led by the union's largest new member, Poland, which is now run by a right-wing nationalist government that seems intent on violating the rights of minority groups, beginning with an attack on gays.

The government is led by the conservative Law and Justice Party, founded by the identical twin brothers who now run Poland: Lech Kaczynski, the country's president, and his brother Jaroslaw, who leads the party. Law and Justice got its parliamentary majority by aligning itself with two dangerous fringe parties: Self-Defense, a peasant party whose leader openly admires the dictator of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko; and the League of Polish Families, an ultra-right-wing Catholic party.

Human Rights Watch reports that a League parliamentarian, Wojciech Wierzejski, accused homosexuals of running pedophile, drug-trafficking and other criminal organizations. At his urging, the state has instructed local prosecutors to investigate homosexuals for pedophilia.

President Kaczynski banned gay rights marches when he was mayor of Warsaw and members of the League's youth wing have attacked gay rights marchers. Mr. Wierzejski said that people who marched in a gay rights demonstration planned in Warsaw this weekend should be "bashed with a baton."

The problems go well beyond homophobia. The preferred broadcasting outlet of Poland's government is Radio Maryja, a Catholic radio station with millions of listeners that is openly nationalist, anti-Semitic and anti-foreigner. It has resisted admonishments from Pope Benedict to stop talking about politics. Radio Maryja's support was crucial in Lech Kaczynski's presidential campaign and Jaroslaw Kaczynski is a frequent guest on the radio station.

the League of Polish Families, an ultra-right-wing Catholic party.

Okay they believe that homosexuality is aberrant behavior contrary to nature and the teachings of the Bible.

Its just possible that these people, having seen the gay marriage debate in this country, know where this incremental gay tolerance thing is headed and decided that they aren't going there.

I guess liberals admiration of Europe is selective... and if there isn't a leftist and socialist regime in power, they disdain it.

What Soros's billions in the "Open Society" to promote drugs and homosexuality aren't working? Let's get the NYT to help.

Exactly how many stories has the Times run on the bigotry of Arab countries? Never mind, it was a rhetorical question. My guess is that this is just the tip of the iceberg of negative stories on Poland, as someone at the NYT has just discovered that there is a whole country full of Mass attending Catholics out there.

Yeah, the Poles are supposed to self-exterminate over the next 10 decades, just like the rest of Western Europe!
Unfortunately, the self-extermination part seems to be accurate, although the Poles going along with it hopefully will not happen.
Homosexuals, which covers most of the staff at the New York Times self-exterminate over the course of their lives (even without AIDS), and must be replaced with new recruits. It seems the Gay Lobby wants to expand that to all society.

I'm wondering how many editorials the NYTimes ran deploring the division and extermination of Poland by Hitler and Stalin? I'm betting the number is zero.

The anti-Christian communist bigots at the NYT projecting their usual intolerance.

Still waiting for the propagandists there to condemn Stalin.

two dangerous fringe parties: Self-Defense, a peasant party whose leader openly admires the dictator of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko; and the League of Polish Families, an ultra-right-wing Catholic party.

League of Polish Families (LPR) is not an "ultra-right-wing" party. It is conservative pro-family Catholic party which tries to adhere to the social doctrine of the Church. Self-Defense (Samoobrona) is a populist party trying to protect interests of the people who got impoverished during shock "therapy" and privatization, critical toward reforms of the last years.

These parties are not dangerous. They represent legitimate and peaceful interests of a large part of Polish population.

If 2-3% of the population (according to last polls) may be considered as a large part - then you're right.

You know very well, that more people voted for them but later changed their minds towards PiS. Rather not because they dislike LPR.

Some formerly Communist countries that eagerly joined the European Union are balking at the social policies that come with democracy.

Which came first the article or the headline?

The articles seems to start out with a legitimate preface with which to begin a rational dissertation. HOWEVER, it appears the writer quickly took a tangent into leftist screed territory -a tangent apparently necessary to support such an absurd headline...

Wrong! The government might be rather nationalistic, but otherwise it is left wing, i.e. against free trade and capitalism.
