Blast Injuries Killed Zarqawi, Military Says (Unbiased explanaition of the 52 min)
CNS News Service ^ | 12 Jun, 2006 | Susan Jones

The official autopsy results are in, and terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi "was treated better in death than he treated others in life," Army Maj. Gen. William Caldwell told reporters at a press conference in Iraq on Monday.

The autopsy - performed on Saturday by senior Defense Department medical examiners -- showed that Zarqawi died of "extensive blast injuries to the lungs," although he also sustained various fractures, cuts and bruises.

When U.S. medics arrived on the scene, Zarqawi was lapsing in and out of consciousness. Medics noted that his lungs were full of blood, and although they rendered immediate medical care, there wasn't much they could do for Zarqawi, Caldwell said.

The autopsy showed that Zarqawi had no shrapnel or bullets wounds to his body, and the injuries he suffered were not the result of a beating, one of the medical examiners said.

Zarqawi did not die immediately. "Death occurred as lung function deteriorated and the lungs became progressively unable to absorb oxygen into the bloodstream," Col. Steve Jones told reporters. Jones is the command surgeon of multinational forces Iraq, who was present during the autopsy and reviewed Zarqawi's remains.

He said Zarqawi's spiritual adviser, Sheikh Abd al-Rahman, died instantaneously of a skull fracture and other injuries caused by shrapnel and flying debris.

Jones explained that the angle of the bomb explains why two people in the same room suffered such different injuries. The shrapnel dispersion may be heavier on one side of the room than the other, depending on how the bomb hit, they said.

Caldwell said six people, three of them women, were in the safe house when the bomb hit at 6:12 p.m. local time.

Coalition forces arrived at the safe house at 6:40 p.m. - 28 minutes later - and immediately started medical care, but Caldwell said nothing would have saved Zarqawi because his injuries were too serious.

Medics report that Zarqawi stopped breathing around 7:04 p.m. - about 24 minutes after coalition forces arrived on the scene.

"These autopsies were performed to make a definitive determination as to the cause of both Zaqawi's and (spiritual adviser) Rahman's deaths," Caldwell said.

"The scientific facts provide irrefutable evidence regarding the death of these terrorists and will serve to counter speculation, misinformation and propaganda."

Col. Jones told reporters that the Iraqi terrorists' remains were treated "with the same high degree of dignity and respect that we treat our own casualties."

Translation: DEATH BY SLOW SUFFOCATION

THAT

ROCKS

He died choking on his own blood. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Just for laughs, I wish that one of the Soldiers would have pulled out a great big rusty, serrated, butcher knife, and while screaming like a maniac, grabbed Zarqawi by the neck.

The other day somebody (perdogg?) posted the medical consequences of this kind of bomb, which matches this article perfectly. The lungs are compressed so completely by the pressure (up to 170 TONS per square inch vs 15 PSI normally) that the blood vessels in the lungs simply shear away. When the outside pressure normalizes a few tenths of a second later, blood pumps right into the lungs.

If anybody could point me to that post I would be much obliged.

Ole Zarqowee was able to view his death the same way as hundreds of innocent people who died as a result of suicide bombers he promoted. Blindsighted.

With one exception. In ol Zarq's case it was life one moment, and a vision of hell's beconing the next. Truely a day of celebration for the forces of good.
May his mutilated body soak in pigs fat before the hell fire starts burning.

Naw, that would have been out of character. It would be a 6 or 10 inch combat knife. Looking like something a Klingon might wield. Something like this,

Much more visually effective, because it's more believable. It's also what the troops would be likely to have.

"President Bush sends his regards!"

I sincerely hope it was something like that.

Maybe go on down through the chain of command, sort of like a military banquet toast.

Oh...read the small print.

"Medics tried a new procedure,,,,the Neckondectomy....where they remove the head from the body to conserve oxygen, but Zarqawi expired before they could begin."

I would imagine that he died as close to the way his victems died as possible without actually beheading him. Think about it. His lungs would fill with blood, just as his beheading victems filled with blood, yes they had the additional pain of someone sawing at their throat, but he would have similar pain as the veins were torn from his lungs. It took him 52 minutes to die, while most of his victems took approximately 7 minutes (based on the Nick Berg tapes).

When you think about it, God's justice is awesom in it's perfection.

I can't imagine anyone is going to perform chest-compression CPR on a man whose pleural cavity is collapsed, and whose lungs are filling with blood. It would be pointless.

This so-called "beating" very probably was CPR

Is that a result of the pressure in the air? If you didn't allow air into your nose or mouth (covered them securely) would the lung devastation still happen, or is it a result of the outside pressure?

Leave it to our home-grown liberal nuts...now they've got a
"grassy knoll" to talk about, even in a desert like Iraq.

I'd bet an Oliver Stone homage to the last days of freedom-fighter
Zarqawi probably has already been green-lighted at some studio.

Is that excruciatingly painful?

I hope the medics didn't give him even an aspirin or acetominphen...
so that they could ask him "Where does it hurt?".

And that they risk Zarqawi becoming a junky by giving him morphine.

If you can keep them closed, then you're absolutely screwed. Think about the pain you can get in your head while you hold your breath and go down only 10 feet in a swimming pool. Similarly, if you're in a jet and put the cap back on a half-finished soda, the bottle is pretty well compressed when you land.

Your only chance whatsoever is to have everything open in an attempt to have a path for the pressure to equalize. That's why they tell you to open windows if a tornado is in the area. But I think in this case, the pressure differential is so large and so sudden that all kinds of bad things happen in your body either way.
