50 BEST MAGAZINES (as per the Chicago Tribune)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 6/15/06

Posted on 06/15/2006 1:50:09 PM PDT by Borges

We drew from all quarters of the periodicals universe in compiling this year's selections. And what can we say about the choices? They're eclectic, accessible and they reflect the tastes of folks who spend a lot of their time immersed in the world of words and images. But magazines are changing a bunch. In the last 12 months, we saw the curtains drawn on Cargo and Organic Style, which made our cut in 2005. Yet some, like gracefully aging performers, remain on the stage: The Atlantic and Harper's. We still like them, as our list shows. But our selections are meant to be a conversation starter, so look them over, then tell us which magazines would be on your list.

I also think The Atlantic is great. I used to adore Reason when it was edited by Virginia Postrel, but the magazine has literaly gone to pot since her departure.

I'll stick with my 64 Shelby AC Cobra.

Snazzy. Is its acceleration "peppy"?

There is too much gratuitous anti-Americanism just about everywhere these days & it sometimes makes its way into "The Economist". However, it also prints plenty of articles which compare the U.S. quite favourably against the European Union, for instance.

"The Economist" tries to keep editorial comment and reporting separate -- unlike most of today's mass media, which no longer even makes any pretense of having "objective" reporting. While reports written by humans will always be "subjective" by definition -- reporters can at least try to be disinterested. Unfortunately, the MSM has become very partisan, and no longer makes any efforts to be "fair and biased". We no longer have "reporters" -- we have agents of propaganda.

"PS - It's GREAT to have a friend of the US in Victoria!"

It's much easier now that we have a Conservative government in Ottawa. Imagine if the only things you knew about the U.S. were what you: saw on CBS,NBC,ABC,CNN,MSNBC, PBS; heard on NPR; or read in the NY Times or Washington Post. That's what's behind a lot of anti-Americanism here. (Along with our own versions of the same media.) Americans are exposed to the same drivel; but, you also have neighbours, co-workers, etc. to discuss things with, and debunk the propaganda. You can also use your own eyes and ears and do your own reality checks. Like any other form of bigotry, anti-Americanism can't stand the light of day (or good information).

I like "The Economist" too, because it has all of the news - stories about issues in the rest of the world you'll never see in the US media. As far as an anti-American slant, I don't really see it. Like most Europeans, they look down on America's fondness for Chrstian fundamentalism, but it's far less critical of the US than our own media outlets like the ones you listed.

I think honorable mention should go to The Limbaugh Letter. While not a magazine in the strictest sense, it rates as a good read.

"I’m curious...did you get one?"

No I didn't. I was considering the Tuxedo (for weight) or one of the sit-on-top fishing models -- but was never able to even find a price anywhere.

However, the simple fact that they want $200 for a paddle was a turn-off. I consult on reducing manufacturing costs, so I know what it should cost to produce things like paddles and blow-molded thermoplastic hulls. Consequently... I recognize greed and a rip-off attitude when I encounter one.

So, it's been another year of repairs on the Sportyak (hot-melt glue is the only thing that wil stick to the HDPE hull) -- plus using the Grumman Eagle canoe and the 1974 Skeeter bass boat...

Thanks for remembering -- and asking -- though!

(BTW, do you know where I could get pricing on the LiquidLogic craft?)
