Pelosi on Iraq: 'It's Time to Face the Facts'

WASHINGTON, June 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke on the House floor this morning in strong opposition to H. Res 861 -- Resolution on the War in Iraq. Republicans brought the resolution to the House floor yesterday in order to politicize the debate on the Iraq war. Below are Pelosi's remarks:

"At the opening of this debate, Mr. Skelton asked the House to observe a moment of silence for the 2,500 troops that we have lost in the war in Iraq.

"The number is a staggering one, but we mourn them one person at a time. I hope their families will live with great pride. I know they will live with great sorrow. My uncle was killed at the Battle of the Bulge and for my father's entire life, it was as if it had happened yesterday. We know that experience has been repeated over and over again across our country.

"In remembering them, let us also salute all our men and women in uniform who are doing their jobs with great courage and dedication, and their families, who are making enormous sacrifices.

"2,500 troops killed, 18,000 wounded more than half of them permanently, the strain our military readiness and eroding our reputation in the world. Stay the course -- I don't think so. It's time to face the facts.

"On every important aspect of the Iraq war, President Bush and his advisors have been wrong: wrong on the reason to go to war; wrong on the reception our troops would receive;

Indeed. There's something deliciously ironic about Bela Pelosi using the term ''grotesque'' to describe anything at all.

How many of the 2,500 heroes were killed using Politically Correct Rules of Engagement meant to be kind to the enemy that your side, Ms. Pelosi, thrusted down the military's throat?

I told my wife the same thing last night when we were watching H&C. They had Ann Coulter on and a Demon strategist to talk about Ann's book. The first thing out of the demons mouth was 2500 deaths so far. I wish Hannity and other conservatives would correct them about the total in the WOT. He should have reminded her that the total is 5500 if you count the vicitms on 9/11 which they should. Whne will Hannity just come out and say to the demons. Its not about the war, they can care less about the war or the soldiers there. Its about GW period.

These are also the same people who told us to expect at least 10,000 of our guys dead in the first couple of days of the Iraq invasion. That was their reason not to go in then - that Saddam's crack Republican Guard would chew up our Marines and soldiers. They have zero credibility on this subject, and indeed on every other subject too.

She's an idiot, a dangerous idiot.

I'm glad these people have gone on record, and shown the electorate who they truly are, rather than trying to obfuscate.

BUT - it's a terrible, terrible disservice to our military and makes their job harder. Sedition usually does. It lies to the country and demoralizes the homefront (or at least those who don't know the whole story), and emboldens our enemies.

I know Iraq and Afghanistan are very different, but I wonder whether it could be that part of the reason we have so many more deaths in Iraq is that our enemies know there is MUCH LESS UNITY AT HOME over Iraq. I dunno.

Certainly our country has sent the message many times over the last half century that if you kill enough of us, we will leave, even though we have overwhelming force. That can't be good for us, no way.

These Democrats are getting more of our military killed. There, I've said it.

Here's the butcher's bill from the Battle of the Bulge:

81,000 American casualties, including 23,554 captured and 19,000 killed.

They need to be called on their statements. Makes you wonder if Hannity has the juevos to do it!

you got a point there...too bad he played poker that night. Her family, the D'Alessandro's, ruled the roost in Baltimore for a good number of years. Probably still got a puppet-master hand in Maryland politics..

I remember in 1940..the peaceniks in the US worrying
about our involvement with Germany???? Stay out of it..
was the Mantra. Guess the ones screaming today about
our pursuit of the dastardly terrorists in Iraq, or
any other place, that we can get to them and kill them,
is beyond their little brain's comprehension?? Have all
these people blocke3d out 9/11? This was the "wake up
call"..Clinton kept ignoring the signs, but President Bush
said..let's go after them? what part of this ...is not
easy to understand??...we sacrificed over 400,000 of our
troops in the 2nd WW....so far, there sis 2500 in Iraq..
heroes all...even if you dumb nitwits don't realize that
our freedom is not free??? Jake

Yep...They sent 20,000 body bags over, while the Dem controlled Senate couldn't vote fast enough to send them in. Even Joe Wilson was only against the war because he feared massive US casualties when a "cornered Saddam" would let loose his WMD.

Too bad the average American has amnesia.

You know, no matter how poorly the GOP comes across, and no matter how many problems they have, the dems consistently can be counted on to overplay their hand and look worse in comparison.

That being said, the GOP certainly seems more self assured and positive in the last couple of weeks. Keep it up! ;-)
