A Strange War...(Israel is at last being given an opportunity to unload on jihadists)
NRO ^ | July 21, 2006 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 07/21/2006 5:11:32 AM PDT by IrishMike

Sum up the declarations of Hezbollah’s leaders, Syrian diplomats, Iranian nuts, West Bank terrorists, and Arab commentators — and this latest Middle East war seems one of the strangest in a long history of strange conflicts. For example, have we ever witnessed a conflict in which one of the belligerents — Iran — that shipped thousands of rockets into Lebanon, and promises that it will soon destroy Israel, vehemently denies that its own missile technicians are on the ground in the Bekka Valley. Wouldn’t it wish to brag of such solidarity? Or why, after boasting of the new targets that his lethal missiles will hit in Israel, does Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah (“We are ready for it — war, war on every level”) now harp that Israel is hitting too deep into Lebanon? Don’t enemies expect one another to hit deep? Isn’t that what “war on every level” is all about?.......................And why — when Hezbollah rockets are hidden in apartment basements, then brought out of private homes to target civilians in Israel — would terrorists who exist to murder noncombatants complain that some “civilians” have been hit? Would not they prefer to lionize “martyrs” who helped to store their arms? .........Instead, a disgusted world secretly wants these terrorists to get what they deserve. And who knows: This time they just might.

It is a great article - and I hope Victor's last paragraph comes to pass.

"And for all the efforts of the BBC, Reuters, Western academics, and the horde of appeasers and apologists that usually bail these terrorist killers out when their rhetoric finally outruns their muscle, this time they can't."

The difference is that in the last 10 years, islamic fighters have killed, raped and brutalized the world - form the USA, to Britain, to France, to the Sudan, to India to Indonesia to the Philippines. There is no safe place from them - the world is starting to open its eyes...

The fact that NO mideast Arab state wants IRAN to be the Big Guy with nukes ruling the Middle East might also come into play

Ironic that Israel who they hate might end up saving their sorry butts

The Bush Doctrine is becoming apparent.

it was the same in 1981 with Osirak nuclear reactor strike in Iraq. the howls came from every corner about the evil joos but deep down, fears of a nuclear saddam eased into sighs of relief..

Other than adding the UN and American Leftist Congresspeople to that list, it's a great statement.

The rhetoric and screaming will become ever louder and more shrill from these groups when they realize it's not working this time.

Guess you could classify the UN with "the horde of appeasers and apologists" but you are right, the American Leftist Congress needs a special label of its very own.

Some final observations on Hezbollah and Hamas. There is no longer a Soviet deterrent to bail out a failed Arab offensive. There is no longer empathy for poor Islamist “freedom fighters.”

One more dividend of Ronald Reagan's victory in the "Cold" War. Hard for the former soviets to have empathy for killers of russian babies. Exposing the islamonazis for what they truly are never would have happened without the fall of the USSR, which emboldened their aspirations to the caliphate.

You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!It would appear that a great deal of The Middle East will no longer tolerate these TERRORIST elements among them!!In the final analysis, they're just"bad for business"!!!
