The homemade fuel keeps 15 school buses running in the area, Goodman said.
Actually, that's quite impressive. I find it disheartening that so many here dismiss out of hand alternative fuel sources as "enviro-wacko Hollywood liberalism." So what if Julia Roberts, Morgan Freeman and Willie Nelson support the idea? We've got to do something to alleviate our dependence on Middle Eastern oil and domestic drilling is just a temporary fix.
Used cooking oil from restaurants and such works fine - but only in very limited circumstances. It's okay for a relatively few crackpots and curmudgeons, but there isn't enough around to make a dent in our energy dependence. More power to 'em, but now that the "secret" has gone mainstream I predict they will start charging $$$ for this.
Having worked in restaurants, getting rid of the used oil was always a nasty nasty job. If it can be refined and reused as a biodiesel then I think it's a option that should be at least seriously looked at. The restaurants have to dispose of the oil anyway, they might as well make some money on it. I think if I had to choose, I would go with Popeyes used oil. : D
Exactly
Why people here automatically dismiss ideas just because someone they don't agree with supports it, has never made sense to me.
I find it perfectly logical since this is a temporaty anomaly and can't last.
No matter how "temporary" additional real fuel oil resources are, this pollyana alternative is a flash in the pan (pun intended).
Does anyone with a brain in their head think that users of new cooking oil will continue to give it away, after use, when the demand reaches a tipping point?
To say nothing of the legal extortionists taxing the **** out of it...
