U.S. Gas Prices Hit All-Time High
AP ^ | July 23, 2006

Nationwide gas prices hit an all-time high in the last two weeks, rising nearly 2 cents to just over $3 per gallon, according to a survey released Sunday.

The national average for self-serve regular stood at $3.0150 a gallon Friday, up 1.98 cents in the last two weeks, according to the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gas stations across the country.

The price exceed the previous high of $3.0117 set in September last year, analyst Trilby Lundberg said.

A gallon of mid-grade gasoline averaged around $3.12, and premium at nearly $3.22.

Nationwide, the lowest price for regular was $2.77 a gallon in Charleston, S.C., while the highest - $3.28 a gallon - was in San Diego.

Regular unleaded $2.859 in Sarasota, Fl.

Why is there the distinction of "unleaded"?
Do they sell "leaded" anymore??

People used to spend 11% of their income on fuel.

Today, it is around 6% or 7%.

It used to be around 4% when gas was lower.

I haven't seen leaded gas for 15-20 years.

BTW $2.99 here on the FL. panhandle.

I can hardly wait to see where a Gulf bound tropical system lands the gas prices at.

Paid $2.86 today in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Watched four motorhomes and six offshore boats filling up too. Somebody has money to burn.

Last week in southern WI it was $3.09. This week it's $3.04. I, too, saw everyone and his Uncle filling up boats, motorhomes, SUVs & family-sized vans at the pump this weekend. We actually filled our diesel truck to the top this week because diesel fuel was $2.89. A bargain!

Besides, after summer gas prices always fall. They'll be manageable by the '06 elections I'm sure, much to the chagrin of the looney left and the MSM. :)

Everyone complains about the price and then they fill up and drive up and down my neighborhood all day and night. Traffic gets worse every single week. The lakes where I go fishing are packed every weekend with boats and jet ski's all being towed by Hummers and Ford Excavations.

Some Crisis. If they were giving gas away free it couldn't be worse.

I think it is still sold in some western states like Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, etc. that don't have smog problems. It was phased out of Texas about 20 years ago.

Adjusted for inflation, still far below Jimmy Carter's era

The kinds of people who buy boats, Hummers, and Excursions can afford to pay for $3.00 gas. Those of us who drive Honda Civics, Chevy Impalas, or Hyundai Elantras - particulary ones purchased used - are having a harder time paying for that gas.

Don't extrapolate for the whole country based upon the top 5% of the population.

Yes, but even folks who own boats must be feeling the pinch. I drove past a boat dealership today, and they were offering free fuel for the entire summer with every boat purchase.

The thing to remember is that these higher fuel costs don't translate into an enormous amount of money for most people. If you drive 15,000 miles per year and your car gets 25 miles per gallon, your fuel costs are about $150 per month when gasoline is $3 per gallon. That's only $50 per month more than it was when gasoline was $2 per gallon, and for most people even the $100 per month that it costs today compared to when gasoline was $1 per gallon is not a huge problem.

The ones who suffer the most in times like this are owners of businesses that depend entirely on customers with lots of discretionary income (movie theaters, sports teams, restaurant owners, etc.).

YOu must not know a lot of people living paycheck to paycheck. I know a guy who, after paying rent, utilities, health insurance, car payment, and food, he had precisely $5 left in his checking account. He lives very simply in a cheap apartment. $50 a month really makes a hole in the wallets of the poor and lower middle class.

Yes but not for on road vehicles.... Unless it has changed the Clean Air Act of 1996 banned all leaded fuel for on road vehicles but left it availble for off road uses, marine, racing engines, airplanes, farm machinery, etc. I'm not sure if that is the current status.

I have a 62 mile drive to the office, that makes it
a 124 mile round trip event. I get 19 mpg, have a
16 gallon tank on my Nissan Frontier, I have to fill
up every other day. Average cost of a fill up is
$36. - $40.

Its getting old.
