INDIANAPOLIS -- A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured when a floor-mounted mirror fell on him at an Indianapolis Wal-Mart.

Police said Christopher Antonio was apparently playing near the 5-foot-tall mirror in the children's section of the store Saturday evening when it fell at the store in the 3200 block of 86th Street.

The boy was with his 5-year-old sister and his mother. The mother told police she was about 5 feet away from her son when she heard a loud crash.

Police said it took two people to pull the mirror off the boy.

And if you had been seated in front of an unsecured mirror, would your mother had been at fault?

There weren't mirrors and we weren't playing. We weren't allowed to touch anything. It's called OBEDIENT.

>> Your kids should be controlled and in view at all times.
>>Hold their hands or have them in a cart.

Don’t forget the cotton batting and a tank of oxygen for good measure.

Were you raised that way?

I grew up without the benefit of a car seat, did not wear a seat belt, was left in the car while my mom shopped, and had unprotected outlets in my home! The horror!

My mom was not unusual; I was not crippled, or stunted, or abused.

I do not like the way American society has changed.

Yes, you could say that all day, and it wouldn't make it true.

Here's another example.

I have never had an abortion. But I know what one entails, and I have researched its effects, such that I am comfortable saying abortion is bad, not just for me but for everyone.

By your "logic," the fact that I have not had an abortion disqualifies me from speaking about abortion in any way.

Is that the case? If not, why is my example inaccurate? After all, I'm prescribing a course of action - not having abortions - based on no experience of my own.

I just thank goodness Mother Slim didn't keep the thing and give it to Mrs. Slim... I still have a tendency to wander off in stores. Drives her nuts. Fortunately, she can usually track me down by going to the tool asile.

Mirrors are meant to be stood in front of.Thats what they make them for.Now you want us to suppose that a 3 yr old child pulled a mirror down that was so heavy that it took 2 adults to lift off of him or her.

Tunnels are meant to be driven through with having them fall on your head.

Where in the article does it say the mother was not wathcing her child? Where does it say that the child was pulling or even touching the mirror? You don't have enough facts to draw these conclusions.

When I was in college I worked at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. One day we heard this horrble crash followed by the sound of breaking glass. One entire glass plate window had fallen off the facade of the Gucci store into a main thoroughfare of the mall. It was near multiple benches where mother's stopped with their children to have a rest, etc. It was amazing that no one was injurred or worse.

Can you not see how these things can happen when parents and kids are simply doing normal things? And if someone had been hurt, Gucci would have absolutely been liable for it.

Now that you mention it, I could totally use a kid leash on Xena's Guy when we go to Best Buy.

In his defense, he would make the exact same statement about me, except he'd substitute Barnes and Noble for Best Buy.

I love you, Xena. You know I do. You are the coolest, and if I wasn't a married man........

Uh, nevermind.

But, unless you can point to one of those critters and say "That one's mine," you cannot possibly understand.

Not quite why are you trying to get off the issue at hand and apply every single emotional hot button issue to this discussion..

Lets go the full gambit and bring the Nazi's into it..

But for the sake of argument: would be safe to say that because you have never had a Abortion you don't understand the physical and mental pain it can cause in a woman to the degree *she* understands it?

This Young lady is comparing babysitting her brothers kids and her experience as a kid to that of freeper who are full time parents... Its not wrong to call someone who is ignorant of a reality ignorant..

There is nothing, nothing, nothing at all in the article that says the child was being disobedient or out of control or misbehaving. It simply states he was 5 feet away from his mother, playing.

Which could be as simple as standing there holding his Poohbear and singing. You're making awful, cruel assumptions this case, as could I make about why you're no longer working in Pediatrics.

Which I won't, because all I have to go on is your posts here. But that's wrong, because it's incomplete information.

Get it?

You've got an agenda and you've got issues and they have nothing to do with the death of a child or the grief of a mother.

N3WBI3 you are AGAIN talking about another poster without pinging them. That is considered bad nettiquette on FR.

The issues of the mirror and the tunnel panel are similar IF one contends that both the mirror and the panel were installed incorrectly.

Why was the mother of a 3 year old 5 feet away--at a Walmart?

Jeez, 5 feet is one body length away, almost a stretch of an arm away. Get real.

>>It is not up to society to babysit.

It Takes a village...Snicker.

Now I am just getting silly, that happens when illogic is presented as logic for too long and both sides are doing it on this thread.

What IS unreasonable is spurious accusations against the fitness of this mother based upon a very short article with few details.

Again, the mother was NOT looking at her child. She was not in control of the situation.

"It is likely that the mirror was hanging without much support

Your first post was wrong in it's assumption then.

From the article: when a floor-mounted mirror

You are (once again) making things up

Where have I invented anything? Link it.

In the beginning of the thread, posters were suggesting that the child be in a cart. Others disagreed. That started the debate.
