UN attack looks deliberate: Annan
Herald Sun ^ | 26 July 2006

Posted on 07/25/2006 4:50:09 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today said he was "shocked" at Israel's "apparently deliberate targeting" of a UN post in Lebanon, in which up to four UN observers were killed.

Mr Annan described the strike as a "co-ordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long established and clearly marked UN post."

He said it took place "despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would be spared Israeli fire."

"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the UN Force Commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular UN position from attack.

"I call on the Government of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on UN positions and personnel must stop.

"The names and nationalities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of their families. I extend sincere condolences to the families of our fallen peacekeepers."

Kofi is an ASS, but I feel terrible for the family of the dead UN guys, Assuming they were decent people who were just doing their jobs. They probably shouldn't have been there in the first place. Since the Hezzies are known to use UN positions as cover, my guess is that the strike was probably an errant bomb that was meant for a nearby Hezzie site.

People here read too much into things, both ways. Now IF those UN people were really helping the Hezzies, well then, F*ck them. On the other hand, I am sure alot of good, decent people go to work for the UN for the best intentions. Its kinda sick how some here react so gleefully to the deaths so quickly.

Time to go Kofi. Back to the third world cesspool from which you slithered. Why do we continue to fund this inept bunch of charletons and politico-rapists? Time to TCOB, run the whole lot of them out and turn of the spigot of cash. Put Kofi's punka$$ on a plane.

Yes, I've read about the video tape. That, along with simply standing by and watching as muslims attacked Israeli's is what prompted my comment about covertly assisting.

At minimum, it's indirect assistance.

Also see the article at National Review, U.N.’s Human Shields Already part of the problem

Here's a snip:

One incident we encountered during our visit to Israel last year illustrates this sad fact. In January 2005, Hezbollah planted five camouflaged “improvised explosive devices” (IEDs), inches on the Israeli side of the border near Zarit, 15 mountainous miles inland from the Mediterranean coast. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) detected these IEDs and, following procedure, notified UNIFIL. A French UNIFIL engineer duly certified that the devices were indeed IEDs, then “requested” that Hezbollah remove them. Hezbollah, not denying it had planted them, flatly refused, stating that since the mines were (just barely) inside the “Zionist” border, it was up to the “Zionists” to remove them. So the IDF sent in a large armored bulldozer to carry the mines off for disposal. This task required making a sharp 90-degree right turn from an Israeli road onto the narrow border trail where the IEDs were located. Making this sharp right turn, the left front corner of the bulldozer inevitably occupied, for a couple of seconds, about a meter of land on the Lebanese side. During those seconds a Hezbollah fighter directed an anti-tank missile at the narrow, unguarded windshield of the bulldozer. The pinpoint strike, which our Israeli sources have admitted required extraordinary training and skill, killed the bulldozer’s driver, Sgt. Maj. Jan Rotzanski, a 21-year-old Russian immigrant from Herzliya. The cynical cruelty of this murder, which Hezbollah proceeded to widely celebrate across Lebanon, speaks volumes not only about Hezbollah, but also about UNIFIL.

Thank you. I agree. I heard last night that it could have been an accident. These are laser-guided that are directed from the ground. Soldiers on the ground are focusing their lasers on a single building in areas where there are a lot of buildings. Mistakes would not be difficult. The amazing thing is how few of them they make. I think Kofi must have struck out in guilt knowing the help the UN is probably giving Hezbollah.

IDF SPOKESPERSON ANNOUNCEMENT
Regarding the UN post near Al Khiyam

As part of its ongoing fight against the Hezbollah terror organization, the IDF operated yesterday in the area of Al Khiyam, from which Hezbollah has been launching missile attacks against Israel.

The IDF is directing its operations against Hezbollah only, in order to defend the citizens of Israel.

Following an initial inquiry, it appears that during the operation a UN post was unintentionally hit. The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident and stresses that it would never intentionally target any UN facility or personnel. The IDF is launching a full investigation in close coordination with the UN.

" the UN observers were cooperating with Hezbollah leaders "

I'd love to hear Israel claim proof of this.

It could have been deliberate, maybe the UN was hiding some Hezbollah members. I wouldn't be surprised.

BTW, whatever happened to the story I heard on the news a couple of days ago about the U.N. observer who was shot twice in the back supposedly by the Hizbullah, and was in critical condition? Was anymore reported about that? I haven't heard anymore about it. I guess the story got buried.

"How does he know it was deliberate? Does he have proof?"

He said "apparently." Of course, when coming from an antisemitic, anti-American liberally darling that means guilty until proven innocent.

Yes, the UN attack on Israel certainly does look deliberate.

Showing his true colors indeed. The "objective" UN making accusations so soon after the event, obviously before any thorough investigation.

Does the UN have any human shields, I mean outposts, I mean peacekeeping forces on the Israeli side near the fighting?
