August 22 : Does Iran Have Something in Store
Wall Street Journal ^ | Tuesday, August 8, 2006 4:30 p.m. EDT | BERNARD LEWIS

Posted on 08/08/2006 3:52:16 PM PDT by Excellence

In Islam, as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time--Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined. Mr. Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the U.S. about nuclear development by Aug. 22. This was at first reported as "by the end of August," but Mr. Ahmadinejad's statement was more precise. What is the significance of Aug. 22? This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to "the farthest mosque," usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind.

I know there is a thread going already, but that was before the whole article was available for free on-line. The whole article should be read. Mr. Ahmadinejad is not a rational person, and cannot be reasoned with. The 10-days in October stand-off with the former Soviet Union was a set match between two more or less rational players. The world does not have that here in this situation.

Well, the good news in that scenario is that good triumphs over evil.

The idea that the civilized world sits around and worries what these stone age nut cases are planning is ludicrous. Time to put an end to their ability to plan anything.

It is a great article...BUT, he gives NO ANSWER about what to do about August 22nd...which is what I wanted to read.

I wonder if a pre-emptive strike of Tehran, on say, Aug 21st might be the ticket?

WorldNetDaily had this story a month ago. It is an interesting scenario in that the Iranian nut job is just egomaniac enough to believe himself the catalyst for the end of the world and return of Imman.

Although the "nuke em" crowd is almost as much fun to watch as the "zot" crowd, I still believe we should not be anxious for this event to take place - and I'm in a very safe corner of the planet, unlike may of my freeper friends in middle America.

"Well, the good news in that scenario is that good triumphs over evil."

~But, not before evil causes chaos, death and destruction.

I think he'll test a nuke on the 22nd and announce to the world Iran is a nuclear power. He might want to rethink this. With Pakistan and India and then, Iran and North Korea sitting on China's borders, all with nukes, and Iran's messianic dreams, China might want to rethink its strategy.

Siding with and using Iran against the West is wholly rational when dealing with equal players. Dealing with someone as unbalanced as Iran's president looking at a billion unconverted Chinese, could be a very, very bad move.

The Communist government and Communist tactics aren't going to work on those messianic Islamists who are even more ruthless.

China doesn't have enough bullets to crush an Islamic revolution in its provinces that will spill onto the cities.

Fact is that since Nagasaki...for sixty years, not one leader of a nuclear country has chosen national suicide.

At the same time Iran does not have nuclear capability for a sustained attack, if they have operational nuclear capability at all right now. If they use nuclear weapons against the U.S. or Israel - it will be no holds barred in retaliation. Using western logic that suggests they'd never be crazy enough to do such a thing. Taking one look at Ahmadinejad gives you the discomfort of realizing western logic is out of place in dealing with these people. The fundamental question is - what happens when absolute intolerance meets the tolerant Christian West?

But, Ahmafoolajihad will gladly nuke Israel, killing every Islamic/Arab fool there, in order to kill Jews. He and his mad mullahdom are demonically possessed enough to believe their moon god will prevent nuclear retaliation upon them. And to tell ya the truth, if it were up to the current crop running the democrap party, there would be no response, just talking through the UN. Feckless works to great advantage for the satanic Moslem jihadhorde.

When you consider that forty percent of the Muslim world is illiterate, as was Muhammad, then it is not hard to understand how these seventh century barbarians buy into flying horses, hiding Imams, and 72 virgins. Most telling to me is the absurd assumption that the promise of 72 virgins was considered by Muhammad to be an irresistible prize ... more valuable than life, children, and family. Muhammad was an illiterate ass. His followers are asses. Islam is an ass.
