Yesterday was Aug. 22, the Islamic holiday that celebrates Muhammed's ascension to prophet status, and also, as some nail-chewing souls quaked, a day that Iranian-sponsored terrorists might unleash yet more destruction. Apocalypse, as it turns out, did not happen, but Tehran did issue its long-awaited response to the UN's demand that uranium enrichment programs be straightaway ceased. The reply, while its precise wording is yet unreported, is said to run more or less along the lines of, "Stuff it." Otherwise, Tehran announces itself open to "serious negotiations," and "dialogue." Indeed, Iran's offer of a "new formula" and willingness to enter "serious negotiations" to resolve the dispute fits well into the pattern of Iranian foot-dragging the world has become so accustomed to on this issue over the years. This tactic can be summed up like this: tease the West by professing a willingness to "engage," leave them with a glimmer of hope that this engagement is actually making some progress, and in the meantime keep plodding ahead with the research and development needed to build the Jihad Bomb. This very temptation has worked wonders for the Iranians. Holding out the...

Iran has promised to respond to UN demands to halt its nuclear activities on Aug. 22 -- a date that some believe could signal a new round of warfare in the Middle East. With the full backing of Iran and Syria, the murderous Shi'ite bigots are well-positioned for taking full control of Lebanon, for rearming and rebuilding to attack Israel another day and for preparing its fanatical cadres to envelop the Middle East and strike directly at the United States. The situation is so grave that it can accurately be said the latest U.N. resolution has opened the door to a new wave of autocratic terror throughout the Muslim world that makes previous regimes -- Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Hafez Assad in Syria, even the Taliban in Afghanistan -- pale in comparison.

For all of the tough talk likely in coming days about using global sanctions to shut down Iran's nuclear-fuel program, the West has few real options for forcing Tehran to back down. Diplomats in the U.S. and Europe are considering how to pressure the regime should it plow ahead with its nuclear program, as Tehran has signaled it may announce as soon as tomorrow, ahead of an Aug. 31 deadline set by the United Nations. The sanctions being discussed, such as curbs on imports of nuclear-related technology, wouldn't affect Iran's overall economy. But the bluntest weapon available short of war...
