What would Henry Ford (the first) do?

Probably high pay for good workers, cool deisel affordable/ecological vehicles, minimize 'financing', keep production American, and not fund perversion groups.

Yea and that Toyota Tundra will soon be built in a new factory in the Republic of Texas. San Antonio to be exact.

Heaven forbid some of our fellow Freepers open up there computers that have American brand names on them and find alot of the chips were made in Japan.

"enjoy driving foreign garbage while putting Americans our of work."

Hmmmmmm....Honda and Toyota BOTH are putting their cars together in the USA, does that count as "foreign garbage"?

Unions priced the American union-built cars out of the market, and since more and more COMPONENTS of "American Cars" are imported (check the labels on GM's electronics, seats, tires, etc.) and you'll see a lot of "made in Mexico" and "made in China" and "made in Taiwan" stickers all over them. Additionally, the MODEL of the GM car may put you in a FOREIGN car, wearing the GM logo.

Among Detroit automakers, values for U.S. or Canadian content by model ranges widely, from more than 90% to less than 30%.

GM's new Chevrolet Tahoe has 62% U.S. content, 25% from Mexico, 9% from Canada and 3% from China. The Chrysler 300C has 72% U.S. or Canadian parts value, with an engine made in Mexico. Ford has a number of models at 90%, including the F-Series pickup, but the hybrid Escape comes in at 55% thanks to Japanese-sourced components.

The Chevy HHR, made in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, is sold with a window sticker mandated by U.S. law saying the vehicle has 85% "domestic" content, meaning parts from the United States or Canada.

But Bo Andersson, GM's vice president of global purchasing, said in a recent speech that 64% of the parts value in the HHR originates in Mexico, while 30% comes from the United States.

GM said the HHR's label reflects an average of its parts value with larger U.S.-made SUVs, such as the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Andersson said GM now buys $9.3 billion a year in parts from Mexico, equal to 16% of GM's total North American parts bill -- making Mexico the second-largest source of GM's parts behind the United States.

While hailing GM's commitment to North American suppliers, Andersson also made clear that the company must control costs to compete.

"We are an American company, but we are also a global company," he said. "I need to buy the best part with the best quality at the best landed cost."

In contrast, Among the top three Japanese automakers:

Toyota drew 75% of its parts value from U.S. or Canadian sources for the vehicles it made and sold in the United States last year, up from 57% in 2000 and 49% in 1995.

At Honda, 68% of its North American vehicles' parts value was U.S. or Canadian. That was down slightly from 70% in 2000 but up from 47% in 1995.

Nissan had the lowest total among Japan's Big Three at 57%, compared with 58% in 2000 and 42% in 1995.

My Accord was built in Marysville, Ohio. It's amazing how the Japanese can build their cars here, using American Labor and still turn out a great dependable automobile. It's not the labor that sucks, it's the design and management of the American Car Industry, that's the problem.

"My Accord was built in Marysville, Ohio"Likewise, the last two NEW cars my wife has owned have been Accords, which rolled up 250,000 miles on the first one, and will undoubtedly roll up another 200,000 miles on the second one. There have been ZERO major component failures, and the quality has been top notch. Made in the USA, by HONDA.

Power window motors were replaced 3 times, power locks would activate whenever brakes were applied moderately hard, power steering unit went out, A/C compressor had to be replaced, interior lighting shorted out and wouldn't shut off if dome lights weren't bypassed, rear differential and bearings had to be replaced (odd for 70k miles on a truck chassis), and bunch of other things. My wife likes the Astro so much, that we traded in on a new one ('05), but this will be the last one since they quit making them. Oh well, if it lasts 4 good years while my kids are little (and keeps the wife happy), then that's good enough for me.

That's very true, but you can't let labor off the hook. Their BS demands throughout the years and yes, management caving in has something to do with it. The Union bosses are so gung ho for power that they don't realize they are putting people out of work by making the companies they work for go bankrupt. Of maybe and don't care since the bosses get their paychecks and retirement paid for through the union.

You all sound like Duer's. They hate American business as well.

I love American business. It's a shame how the American worker is killing it.

What an A--hole company!... (I don't want to spell out the "word" or they might get excited!)

A company that has been losing steadily for years, and look what they do -they take the side of the perverts. Is it any wonder?

You people kill me. Blame it all on the unions, right? Don't hold management accountable at all. Don't blame management for their shortsightedness, poor engineering designs and cost cutting shortcuts to boost the 30 day profit margins.

Yeah blame the union guys, it's always the best answer here isn't it. Junior is clueless and is "driving" his families legacy into the ground once and for all.

But yeah, let's go with your wisdom.......blame the union workers.

The again I suffer from Fordophobia, which is due to my 1st new car, a 1970 Torino, being an utter piece of sh*t

Maybe the car didn't like you. My first car was a 1970 Torino GT and it was a solid tank that ran like a jack-rabbit. God how I wish I would have kept that car.

'Tis a collaborative effort between boneheaded management that supplied piss-poor products and the union workers that poorly-built said piss-poor products. Dubie started off with management (which also agreed to overpay the unions), I started with the unions.

There, happy (or do I need to start singing Led Zeppelin songs)?

**** Maybe the car didn't like you. ****

It certainly didn't. At 13 months and approx 12,300 miles, aka shortly after the 'warranty' expired...

  1. The gas pedal fell (broke) off
  2. The radio tuning knob came off in my cousin's hand. When we stopped laughing he went to roll down the window and...
  3. The crank handle came off in his hand
  4. The inside rear view mirror fell off the windshield while driving down the street
  5. The drivers seat back bracket cracked in half. From that point on, the seat was at approx 40 degree angle
  6. When it rained the car wouldn't start. I had to take a propane torch and dry out the plug wires and distributor cap - all while getting GD rained on!
(found out it was because Ford used carbon core plug wires)
  7. The radio antenna broke
  8. There was also a problem with the factory Flinstone tires, but I can't recall exactly what now.
Other than that the car was just fine. /s

But yeah, it did haul butt. Burned rubber real good.

Where in the world have you been? Plenty of us here have been just as hard on GM's and Ford's management. Part of the problem has been GM and Ford' s consistent record of caving to the unions, ala now GM has a pension problem.
