Well, we had a Freedmen's Bureau attempting to help, but southern opposition (with help from Andrew Johnson) cut it off at the knees. But I suspect you knew that.

As I said in an earlier post, I've traveled, and lived, all over this great country.
One thing that I know is that every region has it's good guys, and it's bad guys.
For the most part, they are good, though.
There are some on this forum who seem to believe that all the bad guys are in the South,
and that there are nothing but bad guys in the South.
IMO, that is true bigotry, and nothing short of ignorant.
They should be embarrassed, and very ashamed of themselves.
But, I know they aren't.

I think the low opinion of the South, and Southerners is SO old, and so deeply ingrained, that most don't realize how truly biased they are.
The image of the South as a lazy, uneducated place has been reinforced by the media as well. It's just accepted fact by many that the South is behind the rest of civilization in all matters.
Now that's not untrue in some respects, but it's also not a bad thing in all respects.
Here's a personal incident to illustrate how educated, well-meaning people reveal their condescending attitude re. the South- without knowing, or feeling guilty about it.
A few years ago I went to visit a friend in OKC- at the FAA Hdq. Now this person's friends heard that I was visiting and showed up for the EXPRESS PURPOSE of hearing me talk! Because they didn't believe I didn't sound like Scarlett O'Hara, right out of GWTW! They laughingly accused me of joking with them, and asked WHERE in New York I was from. They guessed Brooklyn or the Bronx. They were truly astounded because 'everyone down South-and especially New Orleans- has a southern drawl'!
I told them that New Orleans sounds more like Brooklyn, insisted I was a native New Orleanian who could speak proper English, and that we had running water and indoor plumbing and the last member of my family who lived in a plantation did so in the 1800's.
They weren't being intentionally insulting or mean, they were genuinely curious and astounded that I disproved their image of the South. And these were aeronautical engineers, pilots and instructors! Of course they had encountered other Southerners before, but they were professional equals-not 'regular folk', like me!
That they HAD those preconceived notions and generalizations about the South, and Southerners, was sad. That they didn't realize how judgemental and condescending they were was depressing.
You mean the one which was defeated in 1865, or the one which is being invaded by Union forces right now, changing your redneck ways forever :)
