FReeper Canteen ~ Cowboys and Outlaws ~ August 31, 2006

Cowboys and Outlaws
The Most Famous Western Wanted Poster "We were passing the place (picture studio) and thought it would be a good joke to have our pictures taken." So said Butch Cassidy about this picture that eventually led to the Wild Bunch's downfall. The photographer was so proud of the picture he put it in his front window and a Pinkerton man saw it. There's two very interesting aspects of this picture that set Butch and Sundance apart from the other three members of the Wild Bunch. These two style characteristics just reinforce the close bond between Butch and Sundance. Pards to the end. . .can you spot the two differences?

Judge Roy Bean, who appointed himself "the law west of the Pecos River," doled out some pretty weird and severe sentences from his combination barroom/courtroom. He might have been so crabby because he couldn't move his head, a malady that was borne of his own harsh punishment. When young and in California, Bean killed a Mexican official during an argument over a young woman. Friends of the official didn't take kindly to this, so they hauled Bean off and hung him, leaving him to die. Although seriously injured, he was saved from death by the young woman in dispute. Later, once he was "judge," he once fined a dead man in his "courtroom." After he heard the body of a dead cowboy had $40 and a six-gun in the clothing, he charged the corpse of carrying a concealed weapon and fined it $40.
POKER ALICE ©thewildwest.org Born Alice Ivers in England in 1851, she was educated in England and moved with her family to Colorado where she married a mining engineer, who left her a widow. She then hung out in gambling halls, where she became a professional poker dealer for good money. She moved around and worked at various gambling houses, and married a gambler named Tubbs, and lived on a chicken farm until 1910 when her husband died and she returned to gambling and even opened her own place. Her last husband was a gambler named George Huckert. Poker Alice died in Rapid City, SD on Feb. 27, 1930. <

No prob, although I think I stepped on the toes of the hostess. Ooopsie. The photo on the thread was too little for me to actually see much, but in other photos on the 'net one can observe more detail. Anyway, it seemed so innocuous a "difference" that it was not at all obvious to a novice such as myself.

Things are going well here in lovely Virginia. We're getting lots of rain, which is good. I heard recently we're down twelve inches from normal rainfall. Zoiks! During our Boy Scout winter campout in January we weren't allowed to have a campfire because of the drought, which made for some pretty long, cold nights. Since we have one coming up in about three weeks, rain is most welcome (for two and a half weeks, anyway).
