No Draft No Protest -- & a Tragedy for the Country???
NY Times ^ | 9/2/2006 | Various

Posted on 09/02/2006 4:53:56 AM PDT by publius1

To the Editor [of the New York Times]:

Andrew Rosenthal hit the nail on the proverbial head. Online protests don’t make enough noise, and without a military draft, people will not hit the streets.

What a tragedy has befallen America and the world with the election of this president.

Stephany Yablow North Hollywood, Calif., Aug. 31, 2006

This was too good not to share, and only one of several letters that took the same line, i.e., no draft = no outrage in the streets = a tragedy for America.

Another of the letter-writers writes: "I think one reason we have so few protests is that the news media in general did not and do not cover any protests in more than a cursory way." Which suggests that his television is tuned to a station from a faraway planet.

But the truly impressive logic failure is in the lead letter in this batch: "The silence in the streets is partly a sign of millions of tired or retired protesters. There is also silence because we currently have an administration that would not listen to protests if 200 million Americans marched on Washington... Many of us who were the protesters in the 1960’s and 70’s have retired to comfortable lifestyles. We have given our children every comfort we could afford, and they have never had to worry about a draft that would require them to give two years of service to their country... Most Americans see no urgency to protest a war that doesn’t seem to directly involve us or our children."

Conclusion: The lack of a draft is a tragedy for America, because if there was a draft we could REALLY protest.

Meanwhile, on the day these letters appear, the papers are full of the threat against Mexican democracy.

Ah, friends, to call these people idiots insults bone fide idiots worldwide. They'd have to improve to become idiots.

I wanted to share this as a taste of how anemic the logic of the left has become.

Dont worry! When Charlie Rangel is in charge the Dems will institute 2 years of government service. Military, nursing home service, environmental activism, get out the vote or building homeless shelters or any other liberal agenda to make Americans more dependent will constitute the choices.

Darn that President Bush. He just won't give Americans a good reason to get out in the streets and protest like that accomodating Lyndon Johnson did back in the 1960s. That President Bush is just so stubborn! Why he just keeps doing the right things over and over again. How irritating is that? We just want to put on our peace beads, smoke some pot and listen to some Grateful Dead and have a good reason to cut our classes at college and lock our college dean in the men's room, but darn it, it's just not happening!

These Libs at the NY Times still don't get it.The tragedy befell this country when those Islamic animals hijacked American Air liners and turned them into cruise missiles killing the occupants of the planes,The World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

If not for the Courageous passengers of another Plane. The White House probably would also have been attacked.

Hard to believe that people actually want to consign the people of Iraq to the same fate as the South Vietnamese. But there you have it.

The lack of a draft is a tragedy for America, because if there was a draft we could REALLY protest.

This tragedy can be remedied for sure; by a Democrat President; and 'Democratic' Leadership because there will no longer be 'volunteers' for Military Service. . .

Dennis Prager has a thesis that states the more liberal arts education a person has the dumber they are.
"The lack of a draft is a tragedy for America, because if there was a draft we could REALLY protest" sounds like PhD material.

The tactic of bewailing the lack of a draft because it is an easy protest target is not new. Back in 1979(?) when registering for the draft was proposed as a reaction to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, I can still remember the president of NOW on television stating that she was against draft registration, but if it was approved, it should include women so that they could have the same opportunity as the men to protest by not registering.

Classic lib logic. No discussion on the merits, just the political stance.

"I wanted to share this as a taste of how anemic the logic of the left has become."

Are you suggesting that at one time the loony left had logic? When was that? I must of missed it somehow. Or it was more than 50 years ago.

As I sit and shake my head....liberals are on their death march, but they're hoping to revive.
I can hear them gasping, just by reading this article!

Yes, it was a long long time ago, in my youth, when liberal meant something else... but there was nothing then, no light, no electricity, no flush toilets...

Eric Allie is one of the finest conservative political cartoonists I have ever seen. He hits this one right on the head. You can see all of his cartoons at Click here to visit Daily Updating Political Cartoons.

Regarding the letter-writer, her name is backwards.

And missing a comma.

Your last sentence gets to the real meat of the problem.

Liberals, most specifically, the Clintons (both Her Crusty Pantsuitness and the Bent One) view the military as just another issue to be spun in some way to their advantage.

They have no love for those in the military. No understanding. No compassion (past an occasional crocodile tear for the press) and no experience.

I think one of the biggest, most disgusting farces is to have Hillary Clinton on the Armed Forces Committee.

It needs repeating that there was never an "anti-war" movement during the Vietnam War. What it was was an anti-draft movement. Once the draft ended in January, 1973, all the millions who screamed and burned buildings... disappeared back into their cozy grad studies of 18th century sanitary napkins and such. The war continued for two more years, and after the communists won and slaughtered 3,000,000 civilians, the "anti-war" protestors did... nothing. What a truly loathsome group of utterly selfish social parasites, many of whom are now in Congress.

[...Many of us who were the protesters in the 1960’s
and 70’s have retired to comfortable lifestyles...]

Maybe...

I believe boomers think we are protesting when we sit in front of our
laptops "BITCHING ON THE BLOGS". The conservative blog-o-sphere
is self validating, AND it is a closed system. WE'RE THE ONLY ONES LISTENING.

Solution...

Conservatives need to get out of our chairs and SHOW UP
in front of the NYT or the Capitol, or the Border, or where ever.

Because...

When a politician or businessperson see that the multitudes
disagree with him/her, they see votes and/or consumers.

Conclusion...

We're missing it. Big time. BLOG BITCHING is NOT ACTIVISM.

Thanks for posting that cartoon.
I've not heard of Allie before, but looks like he "hits the target"
as well as Michael Ramirez (ex of The Los Angeles Times).

That Allie cartoon hit a favorite point of mine during the 2004 elections.
I said that if Kerry was elected, he'd become The Education President.
Because millions of Iraqis and Afghanis would end up getting an education
as horrible as the one suffered by the people in SE Asia when the
Democrats made sure we cut-'n-run from that arena.
