NO but I come from a military family including father and siblings (now retired Army, Navy, Marines) and now the current generation is joining (one back from Afghanistan a few months ago). There's no way around that combat finds people but there are some situations more dangerous than others.

The whole idea that men and women are interchangeable cogs bothers me. I don't think it's healthy for the nation. I do think its worse when a woman is killed in combat. I think young women are what society should be protecting not who we send to combat. I don't think women and men are interchangeable cogs. I believe there are numerous things that women do better than men.
I believe our founders wrote The Constitution to "Secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity".
We are in a time, due to our scientific advancements and liberating culture, where women do not need to stay at home and have twenty children to assure that some will live to adulthood. Women are not required to stay guarded in the home to protect our future as the Islamists still believe.
I invite you to step into the future of the Twenty-First Century and understand that your feelings and doubts are the same reasoning that the Islamists use to stone women to death in an "honor killing" if they are raped. It is the same thought that allows Islamic Men to own their women, beat and abuse women, sexually disfigure women and sexually abuse their daughters.
Women in our culture are a tremendous resource that we must mobilize against this War on Islamic Fascists. I also don't believe I have the right to deny women the right to "Secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity". They vote, therefore they can die to save me.

Air Force officials say she was found alone and appears to have been beaten.
She was alone and not being held against her will, and was in good condition when she was found, Pentagon officials said.
Which is it?

"They probably thought she was a tourist when they grabbed her, but learned quickly she was a US service member."
Nah. They thought she was a man when they took her. While they were recording footage of her beating for the next Al-Jazeera music video, they discovered she was a woman and let her go.

Wow I'm glad she's found but this woman was married a couple weeks ago. Maybe a runaway bride? From the article:
Just 10 days before deploying to Kyrgyzstan in April, Metzger married Air Force Capt. Josh Mayo.
More than a couple of weeks.

I'm having browser troubles just now so the audio was garbled. I'll check it again after I reboot. I had heard about Gary Sinise but only in passing. He seems to be stepping up.

The article was posted after the replies you see on the first page or two. The original article and Pentagon statement were what was being responded to.

Saw that so it now makes sense. Average 2Lt is commissioned at about 21 so the number of years up to Major is about right.

I am with you. A number of people here are from DU or just frustrated with their own lives and lash out at everything. You should have seen the nasty and unjustifiable comments made about the two Fox reporters who were held hostage. Too many are too mean and get away with it - just look at the horrible comments regarding Ann Coulter, Linda Tripp and others.

I agree with the tone of your post but if I had a choice, I think women would best be not in combat....I still believe women are meant to be cherished and protected, but then what do I know...I'm just an long time married gal....
OTOH......if I could enlist, right now, I would.....

That's a nice feminist post but my position has nothing to do with religion. Human societies aren't infinitely malleable, they are restrained by biological realities. Science doesn't change nature. Children still need mothers even if were talking one or two children instead of 6 or 7. And those mothers are still the major transmitters of culture. The future of America depends on responsible American mothers. Otherwise the country is going to be populated mostly by immigrants and children who major influences are the public schools and television.
Whoever deals with the reality of human populations is going to own the future.

I am only addressing women in combat not women in the military. You losing badly here, so let me help you figure this out.
we are in a war on terror and it matters nothing to our enemies if an American is wearing a uniform or is a civilian, they will kill us.
If they get the chance they will kill us here in our own country, combat for them is where ever they find us.
Sadly this Major who you would accuse of absenting herself without leave for the purposes of fornicating with an islamist, is one of those that is defending you.
