Iran blows away Bush's warm words at UN

Iran's hard-line president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made an unbridled attack last night on the foreign policies of Britain and America and in particular the invasion of Iraq.
In remarks that will infuriate the Bush administration and London and were clearly aimed at the two allies, he said the United Nations Security Council was being abused "as an instrument of threat and coercion".
America and Britain have been trying to rally the Security Council to confront Iran over its nuclear ambitions. But in his fiery address, Mr Ahmadinejad savaged the "occupiers" of Iraq.
"The occupation of countries including Iraq has continued for the last three years," he said. "Not a day goes by without hundreds of people being killed in cold blood. . . the occupiers are incapable of establishing security.
"Some seek to rule the world relying on weapons and threats, while others live in perpetual insecurity and danger.
"Some occupy the homeland of others thousands of miles from their homeland, interfere with their wealth and other resources. While others are bombarded daily in their own homes. Such behaviour is not worthy of human beings."
Mr Ahmadinejad condemned those who had weapons of mass destruction in an implicit attempt to distance himself from the West's accusations that his regime is trying to make a nuclear bomb.
His comments came after President George W Bush appealed over the heads of Iran's rulers with a warm message to the people, stressing that he was keen to resolve the dispute diplomatically.
Mr Bush was unapologetic about the invasion of Iraq, but sought to reach out to the Islamic world. "My country desires peace," he told the gathering of world leaders at the UN's annual general assembly. "Extremists in your midst spread propaganda claiming that the West is engaged in a war against Islam. This propaganda is false and its purpose is to confuse you and justify acts of terror. We respect Islam."
Mr Bush had warm words in particular for the people of Iran and Syria, two of America's greatest foes. "The greatest obstacle to this future [of peace and freedom] is that your rulers have chosen to deny you liberty and to use your nation's resources to fund terrorism and fuel extremism and pursue nuclear weapons." He went on to stress that America was working towards a "diplomatic solution" to the crisis over Iran's nuclear ambitions and to insist that he had no objection to Iran having a peaceful nuclear fuel programme.
He accused Damascus of allowing Hamas and Hizbollah to use Syria as a base to destabilise the region, and of becoming a "tool of Iran".
Mr Bush's speech covered many of the world's most pressing challenges. Announcing the appointment of a special envoy to end the violence in Darfur, he said the UN's credibility was at stake over the crisis there. His speech followed a grim valedictory address by Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary General, who steps down after a decade in office at the end of the year.
Mr Annan said: "The events of the last 10 years have not resolved, but sharpened, the three great challenges I spoke of [when he took office], an unjust world economy, world disorder, and widespread contempt for human rights and the rule of law.
"As a result, we face a world whose divisions threaten the very notion of an international community, upon which this institution stands."

Yeah, its pretty UNJUST that ther are countries in the world, where the money literally squirts out of the ground..... and there are countries where people actually have to work to produce wealth.

What always amazes me is that if we hadnt shown them what they have they'd still be trading dates and honey.
The ME has failed to develop any alternative economy to the oil based one. Can you imagine how poor theyed be with out the oil?

Paris, dump the feckless vermin pile call the UN onto Paris ... the pocket dictators and Islamic murderers should love it there, and the French rulers will be all warm and kissy.
I'm just waiting to see if anyone in the MSM will report on the end of his speech. It was chilling, IMHO. Yet I didn't hear a word from any of the commentators about his religious call for the 12th Iman at the end of his speech.

He talks the talk, but I am not so sure he walks the walk.
The notion of 'peace' in the world has eluded us for quite a while now. Although I am not certain along which lines 'peace' would ever be achieved, meaningful dialogue never hurts. There will always be more radical elements opposed to any form of compromise, and these represent the 'terrorist elements' who will always be at odds with US and in the minority. Even so, the prospects of continual warfare is not in the best interests of humankind in the 21st century.
At what point in reality is "us versus them" confront the reality that "we are all in this together?"
'Radicalism' dies out sooner or later under its own 'fanaticism,' if the US can hang tough, we can hold our ground, but some sort of minimal compromise is needed to save face against the absurdity of the denial of our own imperfections.

Be grateful for the "natural born citizen" provision in the Constitution. So many of the Democrat heart-throbs are barring from the Presidency--Ahmedinejab, Fidel, Hugo Chavez, Kofi Annan, Kim Jong-Il...
