WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two of President Bush's staunchest domestic critics leapt to his defense Thursday, a day after one of his fiercest foreign foes called him "the devil" in a scorching speech before the United Nations.
"You don't come into my country; you don't come into my congressional district and you don't condemn my president," Rep. Charles Rangel, D-New York, scolded Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, was blunt in her criticism of the Venezuelan leader. "He is an everyday thug," she said. (Watch Rangel rip Chavez -- 1:28 )
Chavez kept up his criticism of Bush during a visit to Harlem on Thursday, calling the U.S. president "a sick man" who is unqualified for the job. Chavez also said he is expanding his heating-oil program to help low-income Americans.
During his speech before the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, Chavez launched into a caustic verbal attack of Bush that shocked diplomats and observers accustomed to the staid verbiage of international diplomacy. (Full story)
"The devil came here yesterday," Chavez said, referring to Bush, who addressed the world body during its annual meeting Tuesday. "And it smells of sulfur still today."

He did say all this, but after he complimented and thanked Ghavez for being a photo op socialist and giving free gas to a few of Rangel's constituents. And, he started his request with "Please, Mr Chavez..."
These phonies have never been as civil to their own President as they have been to Mr Citgo and Imanutjob.
Clearly this was CYA move on the part of the Democrats. With the election just weeks away you can bet they are polling continuously on every relevant political development. They wanted to put as much distance between themselves and Chavez as possible. This from the same Charlie Rangel who gave Castro a bear-hug during Castro's 1995 visit to Harlem as well as joining in for a long standing ovation for the Cuban dictator. As for Pelosi, she blows with the political winds. After first distancing herself from Jack Murtha's cut and run plan for IRAQ, Pelosi became the first Democrat to endorse Murtha's call for withdrawal. She made her statements to provide herself cover for her earlier questioning of President Bush's sanity.
Exactly --- it was AFTERWARD.
She looked like a bug-eyed robot when she said that. That whole cockeyed line was scripted.
What possible difference does it make what Chevez says about President Bush. It just doesn't matter.
This may be his strategy for getting us to hate him enough to advocate a violent response, thus redeeming himself.
It's always best not to feed the troll by not biting the bait - and I believe that's what his rhetoric is.

We could get nuked and five days later these folks would be right back to socialism and appeasement. There is no reason to believe they would come together with us - they have been deliberately doing exactly the opposite as a matter of policy for far too long.
Where it should be. Sidelined. Chavez is their problem, not the GOP's.
They're worried about the comparisons that "WILL" be made between him and them.

I actually think they're miffed because his ravings are so much more creative than theirs.

They're a bunch of lying, two-faced hypocrites. Bush has been called every name in the book by the Dummycrat empty shirts. What hypocrisy! I guess it's election time, and they have to pretend to be offended.

I know...deep in their heart of hearts, they are applauding Chavez, but it would be nice if they'd at least ACT like they respect the President and the majority of Americans that voted him in office when he's attacked from without.
Of course. Their own base has said just as worse if not more in the past 5 years. Where was all the "outrage" then?
Rangel does have a point though, Chavez is merely a visitor to this country, but don't pull this phony righteous indignation charade on the American people after you thank the guy for BEING HERE!
