Gym Attire Seen As Latest Attempt to Force Shari'a in US
CNSNews ^ | October 02, 2006 | Monisha Bansal

A Muslim advocacy group's successful argument that a 9th grade student from a Virginia public high school did not have to wear regulation gym attire because of her Muslim religion, has fired up a critic of Islamic radicalism.

The 9th grader at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Va., was "threatened with failing the class if she did not wear shorts," according to a statement released by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

"The student's family contacted CAIR (of Maryland and Virginia) for assistance in resolving the issue. Following discussions with school officials, the student was moved to a different gym class and will be allowed to dress in attire that meets her religious needs," stated CAIR.

The group stated that initially, the girl's teacher told her "the law required that the student wear the shorts."

In light of the dispute over the gym class attire, CAIR also noted that it would conduct diversity training for Lake Braddock's newer staff, as well as "visit local middle and high schools to review their policies for accommodating the religious needs of Muslim students during Ramadan, Eid and throughout the school year."

But Daniel Pipes, a frequent critic of CAIR and the director of the Middle East Forum, told Cybercast News Service that the gym shorts are part of a "campaign" by CAIR to replace rules in the U.S.

It is a campaign "to adapt public schools in the United States to Islamic norms," Pipes said, and "is an integral part of its effort to adapt the country to the Shari'a, or Islamic law."

"Its success in getting the gym rules changed at Lake Braddock [Secondary] School, plus its success in providing 'diversity training' for school staff, have inspired it to become more bold and to 'review the policies' in other middle and high schools in an attempt to bend them too to the Shari'a," Pipes added.

I thought Section 8 housing was privately owned and the state or fed paid a private owner.

They are paid through housing vouchers, which they get by housing tenants on public assistance.

Believe me, nothing will make you bust your ass at two jobs to save money for a first home than discovering the true meaning of Section 8 housing.

Here is part of a very interesting article posted here on FR today...

Tibi: Muslims have to give up three things if they want to become Europeans: They have to bid farewell to the idea of converting others, and renounce the Jihad. The Jihad is not just a way of testing yourself but also means using violence to spread Islam. The third thing they need to give up is the Shariah, which is the Islamic legal system. This is incompatible with the German constitution. There are also two things they need to redefine.

Tibi: Pluralism and tolerance are pillars of modern society. That has to be accepted. But pluralism doesn't just mean diversity. It means that we share the same rules and values, and are still nevertheless different. Islam doesn't have this idea. And Islam also has no tradition of tolerance. In Islam tolerance means that Christians and Jews are allowed to live under the protection of Muslims but never as citizens with the same rights. What Muslims call tolerance is nothing other than discrimination.

SPIEGEL: How many of the 3 million Muslims living in Germany would agree to these demands?

Tibi: A few thousand perhaps.

He can be hit and miss, though clearly he loves movies. City Hall has one of the greatest speeches about NYC ever made in it...

I've spent considerable time in ghettos of all kinds, from urban to trailer parks.

Oh gosh. If this had been a Christian -- say, opting out of an evolution module in class -- she'd have been roundly praised for courageously standing up against the evil public school and there would be shouts of "Amen!" But since she's a Muslim -- and since she's demanded that most treasonous, un-American, despicable of rights, the right to wear pants -- the world is ending.

But wait, there's more. (There always is.) It's not enough that the government strip her of her pants or make her pay for the privilege of keeping them, say some. The government should deport her and millions of her coreligionists! We'll call it the Gaius Verres Approach to Citizenship.

I honestly do not understand why some of these people are admitted to the Big Tent. In the good old days, they'd be placed in the Little Tent out back and we'd charge admission to look at them. But I guess two-party politics makes strange bedfellows.

I agree. I'm also personally of the mind that a public school should not be dictating what the students can/can't wear in the first place. If it were a private school, that would be another story. Normally, these cases are people trying to wear more revaling clothes - why shouldn't they be allowed NOT to wear them?

Jews cannot even travel to Saudi Arabia. When muslims denounce the segregated supremacist society (and Mecca is even more intolerant of kufir), I will believe they are "tolerant' of other faiths.

I want to see the same high profile activism we saw against South Africa.

I can't believe some of the 'Prudish' comments on this thread. I say, make her wear a jockstrap...............on her head.

How could the tipping point have been reached? Despite a few examples...it's not pervasive enough, I therefore "conclude", with observational facts, that the tipping point has not been reached.

Muslims will impose sharia by incrementalism, which means you won't realize the tipping point has been reached, like the proverbial boiling frog. We have muezzins loudspeakers in Hamtrack, and children being frisked and gray old ladies being groped in airports while arabs waltz by.

The frog is now boiling and we're wondering where the tipping point is.

Well, obviously this isn't an isolated incident and when people see CAIR involved, they - and I - are rightly concerned, upset, pissed off, or whatever you want to call it.

When I see worldwide protest marches of millions of moderate Muslims - protesting Islamofascists that have hijacked their religion and want to blow up everything in sight - then I'll think about changing my stance and opinion... until then, it's "Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims".

This issue is not about modesty -- it is the camels nose inside the tent -- setting precedents. I resent having to accommodate "special" groups on anything that is good enough for the rest of us. Why don't we teach school in 373 different languages/dialects? Or have public holidays for 57 different religions/sects? Why should the large majority bend over backwards for the militant minority? F'em!

This is not an implementation of their law. It is a request by a parent to allow for an exemption of the policy that the girl has to wear shorts.

Which part of our culture should she have to conform to? The part that allows some consideration of religious beliefs or the part that forces immodesty on our kids?

If this was anybody but a muslim, you'd be foaming from the other side of your mouth about how we have kicked religion out of our schools.

I don't see it as forcing Sharia law on the other kids, only asking that the girl be ALLOWED to wear long pants. Frankly, I don't see a problem with it.

There's a necessity to speak a common language in the classroom. What is the need to force this girl to wear shorts?

It seems that the school is not being reasonable. Christian students often ask to not wear shorts and they wear sweats or long culottes. In fact, there is a girl on the Lake Braddock softball team that wears a skirt instead of the shorts. Her mom buys material that matches the uniform and creates skirts with attached matching shorts underneath. This girl would be a sophomore or a junior this year.

There are other options than shorts.

Actually, I think that I disagree with a lot of people here on this... If a muslim group were to try to "outlaw" shorts in gym class, then I can understand the outrage. However, it's a matter of modesty, and it really should have been much simpler to solve, simply by saying that the girl could wear sweat pants to gym class.

I think that this is a big deal made by people who are looking for something to get outraged about.

I volunteer this burqa for adoption as exercise attire.

Only if she's the one in the burka!

Hey, no problem!

Let her wear her traditional clothing.

Give her a pile of rocks, and let her get her exercise by throwing the rocks as hard as she can. Soon she can progress to running with her heavy suicide belt, then into axe class to get ready for headless jihad!

Very rigorous class so the cafeteria will have to cook up some goat meat.

School training is good to teach you a trade!
