APEX, N.C. -- Authorities evacuated Apex residents and closed downtown streets late Thursday after a cloud containing chlorine gas spewed from a volatile industrial fire.
Apex Town Manager Bruce Radford said a leak at the EQ North Carolina plant on Investment Boulevard sent several large plumes of chlorine gas into the air around 9 p.m. A large fire broke out at the plant afterward, with multiple explosions heard nearby.
"This is the worst possible hazardous materials incident you could have," Radford said.

Ammonia truck accident report from 1976 - is this it?
Dont thank them too quickly, next step they will be asking why Bush let this happen.
people should be forced to leave, this is like leaving someone in a burning house.
Oh man. So is the plant still burning? Scanning through the posts here and this is the closest indication that it's not under control yet.
It's Wake county. Right next to Cary.
No doubts, President Bush will be dragged into this one.
But why is no one taking a look at Guv Easily?
That's the one! I had forgotten it happened on my 2nd wedding anniversary. As I mentioned in my previous post I was really affected by the death of the pregnant lady. There were interviews in the papers with quite a few of the survivors and hearing them recount what it was like was heartbreaking.
Thank you for finding that for me.
Bhopal was MethylIsoCyanate, iirc. Nasty stuff.
Re: NC
"It's the home state of John Kerry "
I think you meant John Edwards? Kerry is from Mass.
The guv is being looked at. I don't have a link but the guv is under investigation and maybe even indictment but of course, it is NC, and demonrats run everything at the local and state levels, so for as corrupt as the guv is, nothing will be done.
Exactly. It's what I've learned since I've been here. And the reason this state can't boost its economy is because Dems are in control.
Thanks for the correction. It was a freudian slip -- I can't seem to mentally separate the Siamese Dem Twins.
I work about 1/4 of a mile from the explosion, on Schieffelin Rd. We were not able to get to work this AM. Right now, there have been some minor injuries but nothing too serious. The big thing is, they can't get close enough to the fire to do anything about it.
This will probably go on thorughout the day.
The newsman had indicated it may be two or three days before people will be able to back to their homes.
Bingo. The Way the "Black" hearings are dragging out seems perfectly intended to bore the average citizen to death, to the point where they just want it to all just go away.
I don't do the lottery. Learned way too much in CA about the "for the children Lottery".
Be safe.
Thanks for the ping, Alia. Sounds like the situation has been confused for hours now. Many people who work here south of the Triange haven't yet come in to work. They may be held up at the freeways and be still trying to find other routes down.
For those who know the area, US401 and NC42 are probably the best, least-out of the way routes from Raleigh to points south. It looks like you can get back on US1 at New Hill (next to Sharon-Harris nuclear power station).
