Unsure how this plays out

It is now out of the Dimwits and the Pubbies hands. National security has it.

400kt is ridiculous for a first test. I highly doubt the Koreans were expecting that size explosion, which would be one of the largest fission explosions of all time. I think FOX might have their story wrong on that point.

Unless of course they were attempting a fusion boost, which is also somewhat strange for a first test.

That seems extremely dubious - sure some zeros weren't tacked on?

400 kt requires a thermonuclear device and it's actually bigger than the warhead on a Minuteman missle.

Get a copy of "ON THE BEACH"; it's the first of the genre and about as silly.

NO WAY! That's impossible. I've had total confidence in Fox since they reported Gore won the Supreme Court decision in the 2000 election.

FOXNEWS per Bush admin official - NKoreans may not have gotten what they wanted (under 400kt level)

Based on info here, and knowing that the Richter scale is exponential, the size seems very low, like < 10 Ktons.

Caveat: Depth, rock make-up, etc can certainly make all of my assumptions absolutely incorrect.

Thanks for the explanation, you may be very correct. As you know journalists are not the brightest people on the planet so I am just posting what they said on Foxnews :)

I bet Clinton, Carter and Albright will have the balls to give advice as well... no shame.

Actually, we could resume nuclear testing if we wanted to do so. The Senate voted down the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

Well it sounds like there "test" didn't do much.

Had there been any substantial nuclear detonation, we - and everyone else - would know before they reported it. Just like the Indian and Pakistani detonations, detectors went off all over the world.

So at this point I'm skeptical.

Like the guy on Fox is saying, the "400kt goal" smells like B.S.

Yes, I almost posted the line:

Except Einstein, and Fermi, and Feynman, and Teller, and Stanislaw, and Ulam, and...

Oppenheimer, as I understand it, was the organizational brain who guided the scientists. He was intelligent enough to maintain their respect.

Cheers!
