Mel Gibson tells Diane Sawyer he hasn't had a drink in 65 days

LOS ANGELES Mel Gibson calls his anti-Semitic rant following his arrest for drunk driving in July "the stupid ramblings of a drunkard."

In an interview with Diane Sawyer set to air on "Good Morning America" on Thursday and Friday, Gibson says while staying sober is a struggle, he has not had a drink in 65 days.

He adds that he plans to continue making movies and working to heal himself and those he offended.

In a partial transcript of the interview released by A-B-C, Gibson says "All you can do is take another step, keep breathing."

The interview with Sawyer is the first time Gibson has spoken to the media since sparking a scandal by unleashing what he later called "vitriolic and harmful words" during his arrest.

It is not just the completely inappropriate and untrue crap he was spewing when he was drunk, but also the unfortunate bashing after he got out of treatment when he was stone sober. And the fact that he was a big ole' Bush basher before his Anti-semetic, insane rants when he was drinking. I was a fan. I am no more.

He's got his delusion liberal friends in LALA Land now. He's completely lost this demographic--with maybe a few exceptions. IMHO

I would like to hear what some of the people on this board say when they get drunk.

No, you wouldn't.

Maybe he should start again. He's turned into a lefty since he quit.

He is a real lefty because he disagrees with one thing on the Bush agenda? And you want an alcoholic to start drinking again because he disagrees with you? That says a lot more about you than it does about him!!!
And yes, he is a conservative, he was supporting the most conservative canidate in the country, Tom McClintock, for Lieutanent Govenor or California. He is conservative on every issue.

I agree with you here it is a tough disease and there is a lot of wreckage from the drinking (past). I am also in recovery. One thing that makes me stand offish about Mel now is how he just shouted his mouth off recently/arrogantly about politics etc that are against my own.

Showed me who is still in charge in his life (t'ain't God) and that his ego deflation seemed non-existant. As we both know this is a critical shift that has to happen at one point if one is to achieve long term sobriety.

Although I think it is wise to be empathic for his struggles, there are also real consequences for his behavior when he puts down the alcohol. He know longer have the excuse of alcohol--just shows his recovery is very, flimsy, as his big ego is still in charge--not a good sign for a recoverying alcoholic.

I just pray that he stays sober, finds God, turns his will and life (and mouth) over, works the steps daily and helps other. Congrats on your recovery!!

Afterall didn't President Bush overcome this only when he was 40?!? It's easy to speak hard to overcome from what I hear.

I had a relative who was dead at the age of 38 from alcoholism. That's why the subject touches a nerve for me.

I congradulate President Bush for his having overcome alcoholism. He made a judgement call that his wife and kids needed a sober father, and by God he did it!

The war in Iraq is more than one thing in the Bush agenda, and Gibson attacked the war for his own selfish PR/Damage Control. He also said Jews caused all of the wars throughout history. That sounds like the leftist propaganda spouted by extremists on every colege campus in the country.

I do not seriously hope he starts drinking again. I was joking. I don't concern myself with what Gibson does in his personal life unless it effects other people. Gibson showed no concern for anyone other than himself when he decided to get completely drunk and drive. Then he tries to improve his image by attacking our efforts in Iraq.

I am also not buying into this mentality that Gibson is the victim and alcohol is to blame. I hope he does straighten his life out, but he needs to worry about his own problems rather than attacking US foreign policy.

Lousy post-you have obviously never been heartbroken due to an alcoholic.

Dang - Hey Mel - come over to my house and I'll break out the Jack Daniels and some cigars.

I'll smoke a cigar with you. But I don't drink anymore.

Spent eight days in an ICU having ethanol detox seizures. Hallucinating and nightmares... awful.

Go easy on ex alcoholics.

"In describing its portrait of a civilization in decline, Gibson said, "The precursors to a civilization that's going under are the same, time and time again," drawing parallels between the Mayan civilization on the brink of collapse and America's present situation."

"What's human sacrifice," he asked, "if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?"
