Mel Gibson Did It Again!
foxnews ^ | Thursday , October 19, 2006 | Father Jonathan Morris

Never before had I made an intercontinental flight to see a movie. But that's what I did this month when I accepted Mel Gibson's invitation to preview and critique his new film “Apocalypto,” scheduled to appear in theaters on December 8th.

I didn't make the trek across the ocean for entertainment value. My work as a consultant on and off the set of Gibson's “Passion of the Christ,” gave me a new appreciation of the power of well-made, serious, and widely-distributed movies. They influence culture. They affect the way we think about the story they tell. Sometimes they warp our view of history or of humanity. Other times they inform, inspire, and challenge. But they always leave a mark.

It's common knowledge now that Mel is an anti-defense, anti-Republican lefty who hates Jews, BTW. It's strange that any subscribers here would defend his behavior.

I cannot argue with you there...he admitted he was a consultant on "The Passion" and I suspect that Father does have a bias toward Gibson

Since Gibson is not on trial for saying what was heard and reported by a police officer (or deputy sheriff) it doesn't matter. Gibson apologized for offending a group of people, and now he has offended many more with his outrageous remarks about the Bush Administration. Gibson has lost millions of fans now.

One can't help but wonder if he is badmouthing President Bush just to get back into the good graces of the Hollywood elite.

Thanks for the post...pretty much the way I feel about the whole situation. I really love Martin Scorsese movies but I do not really want him to provide political advice.

Wow. What a maroon!

You really don't have any intellectual basis on which to pin your outrageous slander, do you?

"Phstpok said"

Goody. Care to contradict, with evidence, any of my posts?

No? Well, to steal from Deputy Dawg, "don't go away mad, little buddy, just go away."

What a silly thing to say-"he doesn't like Christians". Why because he makes a comment you don't like about President Bush's policies. First off, Mel Gibson is a commited/devoted Christian Catholic. Second off, Mel Gibson holds extremley conservative conservative views on many, many subjects. Anti-abortion, against stem-cell research, against gay marriage, he spoke up for Terri Schiavvo on that whole debate. As a matter of fact, he is probably MORE conservative than most people on this site. Because he is against Bush on a few policies, does not make him anti-Christian, or anti Bush. As far as you jaycee, your comment about Mel is nothing to me now, it brings to mind, Mel's first movie he directed, The Man Without A Face, and a line from it. You should see it. You quoted from it directly, with the line you wrote. It is actually kind of funny. A person is either up or down with you. There is no in between.

I won't defend his behavior. But he's a damn good film maker.

Excellent post. I don't keep up with Gibson's personal life except what shows up in the papers, but his "rant" wasn't that long ago.

We know he has admitted to abusing alcohol....does anyone know if he has recovered or ifhe is in treatment?

While I am a fan of his work, I'm not sure I'd take much of what he says right now all that seriously based upon the fact that he's discussed his recent alcohol abuse. It sounded like he had a pretty serious drinking problem of late.

"One can't help but wonder if he is badmouthing President Bush just to get back into the good graces of the Hollywood elite."

In spite of Hollywood's intense and public criticism of Gibson, he's kicked their a$$es at the box office.

Why would he NEED Hollywood? Hollywood NEEDS Gibson.

He is in an ongoing treatment program. AA five days a week. And a three month out patient alcohol rehabilitation center.

I don't feel as some of posters feel that this is going to be a "liberal" message film. As a matter of fact, if anything, I think it is going to be a "conservative" walk up call, warning about the impending doom to our culture. I remember when Gibson first talked about the film in a call to James Dobson, and said "Dr. I think you will like it". If he thinks that James Dobson would like it, it is a pretty good bet it will be conservative.

The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys

Well, that's two for Mel. Thanks for posting this.

Absolutely 100% unrelated to the slander you chose to participate in against me! SO THERE! (please read on, that is tongue in cheek)

But I happen to agree (assuming we believe the media reports of what can be verified)

However, if you will admit that you were wrong in your baseless attacks on my position, I might consider thinking about you having a point in this regard.  (hint, hint, read my tag line)

Straight statement, no artifice or guile, if you can answer the implicit question you raise in your post then I am very interested in the result and very open to whatever conclusion that can be proved.  I have clearly stood up against the "conventional wisdom" as passed on by the  powers that be about what "really happened" in this incident.  I don't deny that account.  I simply deny that that account has been proved, not only to my satisfaction but to the simplest level of honest discourse.

And Mel Gibson is not "on trial" for anything except DUI, which he has agreed to a plea deal over.  Nothing else is a "fact" in any legal sense.

There is more to this than is apparent.  Watson, the game is afoot!

It may not be apparent, but I'm having fun over this.  Not the argument, per se, but the argument over the question.  I don't revel in "you said - I said" crap.  I do revel in really strong "here is this idea and here is the evidence" kind of posts.  In fact, that is why I participate here on FR.

You have now proved to me that you want to go that way by what you have posted on this thread, even when we could have driven right off of a cliff.  Thank you.

You missed a bit.  "It is common knowledge now that the drive by media wants you to think..."

There, that's better.

Big deal. Mel Gibson is an old-fashioned paleo-con of the New Oxford Review variety. That doesn't change the fact that the man makes outstanding movies.

I'm with you. I expect this film to be on par with all the others that he has made.

As far as his recovery goes, I wish him and his family well.

When he is recovered, I may still disagree with him on some issues...but then...I'm not his fan because of his personal life but rather what he does on the silver screen.

I agree with you totally. And speaking of Rick Santorium, Mel Gibson was spotted a couple of years ago, having lunch with him in D.C. several times. He can't be all bad!!! Mel Gibson I mean!!

You're welcome. IMO, it's bad news. What I'm more concerned about, though, are associated general trends.
