The letter in question reads as follows:

Greetings XXXX XXXX,

You are being sent this letter because you were recently registered to vote. If you are a citizen of the United States, we ask that you participate in the democratic process of voting.

You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time, and you will be deported for voting without having a right to do so.

At the same time, you are advised that the government of the United States is installing a new computer system to verify the names of all new registered voters that vote in the October and November elections. Anti-immigration organizations can ask for information from this new computer system.

Unlike Mexico, here there is no incentive to vote. There is not a voter registration card in the United States. Therefore, it is useless and dangerous to vote in any election if you are not a citizen of the United States.

Do not listen to any politician that tells you the opposite. They are only looking out for their own interests. They only want to win elections without any regard to what happens to you.

Sincerely,

Sergio Ramirez

I read this letter and it does not sound hateful. It's telling the truth.

What the drive-by media are doing is erasing the second sentence which reads - If you are acitizen of the United States, we ask that you participate in the democratic process ofvoting. Then it becomes questionable to interpretation.

Email me if you wish to have the original Spanish copy.

or you are an immigrant,

This is where they screwed up.

It looks like a typo, but it is definitely incorrect to say that an immigrant may not vote.

HEADLINE should read:

You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant a non-citizen, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time, and you will be deported for voting without having a right to do so. There, I fixed it.

You are being sent this letter because you were recently registered to vote.

This mailer seems to try and bypass the registration process.

Here lies the problem:
If the mailer was sent to a person who already registered to vote, I would have to assume they are eligible to vote and will receive a voter registration card once it is processed.

If they aren't eligible to vote, they would never receive a voter registration card when they show to vote, they will be turned away.

That in itself my be a problem after the election sorting though the bogus claims of "voter disfranchisement"

I read this letter and it does not sound hateful. It's telling the truth.

It does not tell the truth as it is written.

Let us assume that you are an immigrant, just as I am, and you believe this man. Let us now analyze what he is writing in plain English.

"You are being sent this letter because you were recently registered to vote. If you are a citizen of the United States, we ask that you participate in the democratic process of voting."

Great! This guy wants me to vote for him. :-).

"You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal ....."

Nope. I am as "by the book" legal as you can get. :-)

"OR "

Hmmmm.....I wonder what the "or" is.

".....you are an immigrant".....,

Yep, I am an immigrant just as Andrew Carnegie was and that guy, Polybius, on Free Republic is. I'm going to work hard and make it in this country too. :-)

..........voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time, and you will be deported for voting without having a right to do so."

What! I did not know that!

All this time, I thought that I would be able to vote once I became a citizen. Now I find out that only native-born citizens can vote in Federal elections just as only native-born citizens can become President of the United States. :-(

And, if I do vote, I can get deported! :-o

Sorry, but this idiot played fast and loose with the English language. "Immigrant" is not a synonym for "illegal alien" or a synonym for "legal resident" or "resident alien".

Sending an immigrant, such as myself, a letter that states in plain English that "You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal OR YOU ARE AN IMMIGRANT, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time, and you will be deported for voting without having a right to do so" is not only sending a false statement but also committing voter intimidation as defined by the Voting Rights Act.

"When the "Truth" becomes a "Hate" crime."

To be expected. Truth is false, lies are truth.
The Socialists also want the Bible labeled as hate speech.

I live in the 47th congressional district, specifically Anaheim.

Loretta Sanchez isn't even from this district. Before she was elected, she lived in LA County,in an affluent area of Long Beach known as Bixby Knolls. She moved into the highly hispanic area of Garden Grove/Santa Ana because she knew that she could garner the hispanic vote. (the fact that hispanics would vote for only hispanics is racist...but thats another whole topic).

Since the 47th district is a democratic moajority, I am registered as a Liberterian (think shrink the fed govt) and have been voting my party line. However, this flap over an innoculous, information letter has me incensed.

I will definitely vote for Tan Nguyen. I urge anybody in the 47th to take note of what is happening before our very eyes... we are losing this area to an agressive and determined group of non-americans determined to take back the area that they claim was stolen from them.

Anyone living in the 47th understands that this whole area has degenerated into a third world country. Abandoned shopping carts, walls with graffiti, trashy streets, bi-lingual signs, over-crowded apartments with no street parking available, and 80% of the students getting free school breakfast and lunch.

Yup, welcome to Norte California

Both the Bushies and the Democrats want to encourage illegal aliens to vote... for their own cynical reasons of course.

And image of the spanish version was posted by the OC Register:

http://www.ocregister.com/newsimages/news/2006/10/20document.pdf

Saludos [redacted]

Atte.

Sergio Ramirez

I don't understand how this can be considered a crime. What law does it break? This is insane. Poetic justice would be for dude to get elected.

It's not a "Hate Crime" but it is certainly not the truth. Immigrants that have become citizens most certainly can vote - the governor overreacted, but being an immigrant himself he was probably very insulted by it. Totally out of bounds, dishonest behavior by whoever is responsible for writing it.

Tan Nguyen would get my vote if I lived there. My understanding is Vietnamese have trouble bringing relatives to the USA in comparison to how wide open this nation is to illegal immigration from Mexico on South. That this had bred resentment.

Vietnamese fought on our side. When have Mexicans ever done so? They despise the gringo while Vietnamese have no such phony resentments

I believe the letter in general is true and accurate except this paragraph which I believe to be FALSE.

That's unfortunately underminds any credibility the letter might otherwise have.

Obviously if you are still an immigrant, you are not a citizen and thus cannot legally register to vote according to the CA SoS's website.
