It also raises questions about the role of high profile celebrities that have taken on African causes -

Liberal adore Africa but could not care less about individual Africans just as they adore "society" but could not care less about the individual citizen.

Nothing Madonna does will convince me that her primary motivation is nothing more than self promotion.I predict that M's adopted children will fade into the background once she's milked this latest episode for whatever publicity it's worth.

Indeed...great title. I hadn't remembered that Beatles song, which fits perfectly.

ummm - i remember reading that the child had spent his entire life in the orphanage - and had survived malaria and pneumonia - and had NEVER once been visited by his extended family....not even his father.

Shame on Madonna for taking him out of this situation - (not)

I've never been a fan of Madonna - but piling on her just because she is Madonna is a bit idiotic, IMHO

I do have to say that I am proud of Madonna..she is one of a few liberals that carried out her threat to move to another country if George Bush was elected..

The bad thing is she is a has been in this country and we have to listen to her tell us all about the wonderful work she is doing in Africa..like hasn't Bush sent billions to Africa to feed the people..Just let someone like this adopt an orphan and she is all over the news with all the money she is spending to build orphanage's and schools for the poor..It is like no one has heard of a publicity stunt..Sure the child was sick but why didn't the crooked government of Africa give some of the money we the American tax payers sent to help make him well..No it goes into their pocket and to heck with anyone there let them die seems to be the motto from that government..

If Madonna would get divorced and marry Paul Mcartney, I am convinced there would be Peace on Earth!

"For a start she could lend her support to the World Health Organization's new policies on malaria control. David Banda's two siblings both died of malaria, joining more than a million young Africans that succumb to the disease every year".

There is one problem here. If the people of Africa are so poor that they can't feed their current population, having more children survive to adulthood will make the situation better HOW?

If there isn't a concurrent and realistic plan for improving economic prosperity, increasing population will make things even worse.

Madonna currently funds six orphanages in Malawi

I can't believe I'm defending this person, but she is funding 6 orphanages. That's 6 more than I'm funding and probably 6 more than the author funds as well.

I thought this whole adoption thing was self promotion, but apparently she has some connection with the country and is doing something to help. If she isn't doing what the author wants her to do, that's tough. Let the author do it or raise the funds to do it.

We support a Thai foster child. When I finish my degree and start working again in January, I plan to foster 2 more children. I do what I can. I think Madonna is doing what, with her resources at her command, she can do. I think you are right on in your assesment of the situation.

Think she'll dye it's hair pink and glue rhinestones to it?

Madonna showed no mercy with this man and his children. For a few thousand dollars she could have helped him buy a machine to start a business. She could have lifted up his life so he could make a living and bring his children home with him. Instead, she took the one gift the poor man had, his own son.

Now Madonna thinks it is fine to take children from their parents if they are poor? What a pathetic person. And how very sad for this man. How could his country's government allow this? How awfully sad. BTTT

I don't have a problem with what she is doing either.
However,I AM concerned that it creates in Africans as a group that to be "rescued"by white people and/or Westerners is the ultimate solution.
Overthrowing those corrupt one-party African kleptocracies and embracing monogamy might go a lot further in advancing the continent's progress than acts of charity, nobly intended as they might be,from superstars like Madonna.

For the sake of millions of Africans, let's hope she takes the celebrity path less traveled and actually does something helpful for ordinary Africans and not something helpful for the elites that rule Africa.

Now, why is that her responsibility? All she wanted to do was adopt an African baby. She donated 3million dollars to the orphanage this child was at. Why is it HER responsibility to save Africa by doing what writers sitting in their comfortable offices think she should do? Instead of throwing money at it, she is giving her life to it...I cannot think of many more noble things than that. You all don't like Madonna...neither do I. But what she did was a good thing. She saved a boys life.

She wanted a black child as an accessory because it matches her heart.

This father - and the rest of the child's family - cared so much about him that they never once visited him in the orphanage - Yeah, this sounds like a great, caring family

if it's true that one judges others by oneself - wonder what this says about your heart...
