Webb Defends Novels Against Attacks (cleaning off the fan in Virginia)
The Washington Post ^ | October 29, 2006 | Tim Craig and Michael D. Shear

Virginia U.S. Senate candidate James Webb yesterday delivered his strongest criticism of incumbent Sen. George Allen of the fall campaign, vigorously defending himself against Allen's charges that he wrote sex-laced passages in his fiction novels.

He called on voters to reject what he called the "smear tactics" of Allen and his campaign, who released excerpts Thursday from Webb's novels to the Drudge Report Web site and said the writings were lurid and inappropriate for a man seeking to serve in the Senate.

"The fish rots from the head down," Webb (D) said, referring to his belief that Allen (R) is responsible for his campaign staff's tactics and has now shown his true character. "Our government should no longer be in the hands of a group of unprincipled, small-minded, power-hungry character assassins."

"Keep your club i could care less..it does not impress me one little bit.."

That doesn't matter at all; I would just think you'd prefer to comment on things you know something about. :) Have a good evening.

Here is something I know. Forget every word James Webb has ever wrote, good and bad. Forget his life in his youth and everything he did before this summer. Based on the past couple of months of this senate race you can only conclude that James Webb is a worthless piece of human excrement.

It always rings the bell when a new poster attacks conservatives as a way to defend Democrats.

Newt Gingrich, Scooter Libby and Lynne Cheney have all put rather bizarre sex scenes in their books, and to take just the disturbing parts and isolate them from the rest of the book is disingenious.

Neither Gingrich nor Libby are in power, and as for Lynne Cheney, her book “Sisters” was written in 1981 and the worst passage that liberals can point to is this one:

”The women who embraced in the wagon were Adam and Eve crossing a dark cathedral stage -- no, Eve and Eve, loving one another as they would not be able to once they ate of the fruit and knew themselves as they truly were. She felt curiously moved, curiously envious of them. She had never to this moment thought Eden a particularly attractive paradise, based as it was on naiveté, but she saw that the women in the cart had a passionate, loving intimacy forever closed to her. How strong it made them. What comfort it gave.”

Pretty tame. Contrast that with a US Senate candidate's whose every book, is laced with passages of perverted sex. We know it's only writing, but it does reveal some insights into his mind and character.

Even in "Fields of Fire" that you liked very much, I found these passages disturbing:

From Fields of Fire: “Snake (the protagonist) sees his mother on the bed: "She looked as if she were carefully attempting to re-create a picture from some long-forgotten men's magazine . . . . She was naked underneath the robe . . . . and the robe fell loosely away, revealing her. Snake shrugged resignedly."

"He saw the invitation with every bouncing breast and curved hip. . . . He was thirteen. . . . She was fifteen . . . . In a few moments she drew him to her and he murmured in his quiet voice, 'I am still small.' 'You are large enough,' she answered. And he found he was."

I have more steamy passages to post from Webb's books, but I don't think it's necessary. And besides Webb's writings about pedophilia and incest, his depiction of women is totally offensive. By the way, the incestuous pedophile passage is in "Lost Soldiers."

George Allen's press release is quite explanatory:

· Some of Webb’s writings are very disturbing for a candidate hoping to represent the families of Virginians in the U.S. Senate.

· Many excellent books about the United States military and wartime service accomplish their purposes, and even win awards, without systematically demeaning women, and without dehumanizing women, men and even children.

· Webb’s novels disturbingly and consistently – indeed, almost uniformly – portray women as servile, subordinate, inept, incompetent, promiscuous, perverted, or some combination of these. In novel after novel, Webb assigns his female characters base, negative characteristics. In thousands of pages of fiction penned by Webb, there are few if any strong, admirable women or positive female role models.

Why does Jim Webb refuse to portray women in a respectful, positive light, whether in his non-fiction concerning their role in the military, or in his provocative novels? How can women trust him to represent their views in the Senate when chauvinistic attitudes and sexually exploitive references run throughout his fiction and non-fiction writings?

And yes, Allen is hitting Webb on the issues as well.

It politicizes writing. Newt Gingrich, Scooter Libby and Lynne Cheney have all put rather bizarre sex scenes in their books,

It sounds like you are familiar with these "bizarre sex scenes." Can you please post some excerpts so that we understand your point of view?

To all
Look how low Webb went in his primary run!
The political cartoons he used on Harris Miller could have been issued by Goebbels or some Czarist antisemitic broadsheet.

Oh wow, you are in good company, then.

I suppose you'll be talking about high roads the next time some smut-related scandal comes out, which is supposed to be regarding Allen's divorce files where he's going to be accused of spitting on his wife.

But certainly, let Allen talk ONLY about the issues and do not dare defend himself with the facts.

The divorce file thing really cracks me up.........does Webb really want to go that route? I mean, after all, he is on his third marriage........

I heard it earlier today. What's really amusing is supposedly they are squawking because Allen's divorce file is sealed. My understanding is that is VA law, all divorce files are sealed.

We're just going to have to wait and see. But it would be funny to see what all those talking about high roads and smut would say then.

That's so freaky. I was just going to post that. Glad you did. “[I]t is no secret that sex is commonplace in Bancroft Hall. The Hall, which houses 4,000 males and 300 females, is a horny woman’s dream.” (James Webb, “Women Can’t Fight,” The Washingtonian, November 1979)

"The fish rots from the head down," Webb (D) said... ...could also apply to the mind who thought up those novels.

that is different

1. the public has no business in Allen's divorce issues

2. if attacked, he most certainly should defend himself

It's not the "public" seeking to unseal Allen's divorce records it is Webb.........

Webb's writings are in the public domain, he has campaigned on his name as an author.....

So you are correct - this is different.........so why isn't Webb being called on the carpet about seeking Allen's private documents, which BTW, are sealed based upon Virginia law?
